(Updating old thread because it has all specs)

Didn't realize I've had this rig for almost 5 years. It seems to be slowing a little.
Thinking about upgrading the CPU, video card and adding an ssd for the OS. I game and do a little photo editing. Playing Rage right now (games slows way down, like lag, when playing single player) and want to play Battlefield 3 and the new Call of Duty.
Otherwise, it runs fine.

Is it a worthwhile upgrade or should I build a new rig?
Can I reuse anything I have if I build?

Specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP
Memory: 4GB (1GB X 4) CORSAIR DDR2 PC2 5300
Video Card: ASUS 8800GTS 640MB
PSU: Corsair 520 Watt

Update 6/01/07
Finished the build.

Core 2 Duo E6600
P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP
PC2 5300
520W Power Supply
EVGA 8800GTS 640 MB

Looks good to me! Very nice stuff you picked there, particularly the mobo!

Cheers,

Way overkill on the power supply. The Corsair 520 would EASILY handle that system.

You don't need DDR2 800 if you aren't going to overclock...I suppose if the price is the same go ahead, but you didn't provide any links to where you are buying this stuff from.

Go with the eVGA 8800GTS, I believe its cheaper generally and they are known for their support+step up program

The motherboard is probably a bit pricey if you don't NEED built in wifi

I am buying the parts at Newegg.
As far as the wifi, I am on a wireless network and I am looking towards future expansion (stream movies maybe?) as I tend to keep my PCs for 3 - 4 years.

i agree with the poster above. I may also suggest going with 4gb of memory. Just cause its cheap right now and if you keep your computer like you say for a couple of years then it should benefit you there.

also what monitor do you have???

Save money on the memory if you are not overclocking.

$319.99 AR as opposed to $364 if you are getting the 640MB version

Good suggestions. I'd go for the E6420 instead of the E6600; you'd notice very little difference but your wallet would appreciate it ;).

OP: Fear not, if we were tired of these threads by now we'd have stopped posting in general hardware. Always happy to help. :)

I cringe every time you recommend the E6420, but I'm a DC guy :p

Posting from the new machine.
Vista will take a little getting used to but the build and install went without any hitches.
Thanks again for the help.

IIRC, this new rig happened because your wife fried your old motherboard by unplugging a PS/2 keyboard while it was on.
Enjoy your new system.

Ya, I threw in another mobo then my video started dying. I'd lose my video signal so I said the heck with it.
I am happy. :D

Unplugging a keyboard ruined your motherboard?

Wow, bad luck. I yank cables left right and centre in work and I've never been that unlucky.

Good to hear you've got the new PC up and running. Enjoy!

Yea its generally a bad idea to plug a PS2 keyboard or mouse in while the computer is running. I have done it without problems. I have even made a project using a PS2 keyboard an a microcontroller and I hotplugged that with no problems but I guess there can be due to the instantaneous current draw.

Just an update.

Been running 4 months without a hitch. I was surprised that I couldn't run STALKER at the full video settings. But otherwise no problems.

Thanks again for the help.

What is your budget like? A used Q6600 for ~$75 and overclocked + new video card would be a huge upgrade but not cost much money.(even a used 4890 for $70 or so is a big step up from an 8800gts)
