I actually had a chance to speak to a PHD in physics dude and I was told I could ask one question.............i asked how magnets work

Ill give you a brief rundown, so everything is made of electrons and generates a field, usually the protons negate that field and the neutrons just dont do shit, in certain materials the electrons can be rearranged to be out of the field of the protons to achieve an externally visible magnetic field.
