can u guys pls help me. i dont know i should buy duron or celeronII. my budget is about 300-350 cdn for mb/cpu. the thing i dont understand is why are socket A mb so expensive?? since duron can't be o/c (any duron owner able to o/c?), i think the performance of cII and duron at same price range is about equal. cII 566@850=duron at 650?? what u guys think?

If you already have a BX board why not get a 850c2? Seems pretty good to me; should hold you over pretty nicely for a while.

Well, the equivilantly clocked Durons flat out beat the Celerons. However most vendos don't have Durons in stock yet and there is only one mobo currently.

Just a few points to consider.

The Duron/Tbird mobos like the ASUS A7V are so expensive because they are in such short supply but in high demand (because the chips are new and have gotten a lot of good press). The same is true of the new 815 boards like the ASUS CUSL2. At least the CUSL2 has a lot of fancy features, while some of the Duron/Tbird boards look pretty plain Jane to me.

BTW, I agree with your equation.

I compiled this for another tread, but I think you will find it useful. It was for a budget system for a non-overclocker.

Here goes a price list! I worked hard on it so I hope it helps!
I have order form Buy.com but have not YET(maybe soon) ordered for the other two.
Big thing like cases and monitors usually ship by them selves so it does not matter were you buy them. You will not save on shipping much on the cases and monitor, but ordering other things together helps a lot.

Case:
Here is were you can buy a case and CONFIGURE it!!!!!! These are just some examples.

thanks a lot. i'm not using a bx board right now. believe it or not i have a HX. hehehe. oh well.. i'm still undecided. maybe i'll wait till more ppl own duron so i get more feedback about it. plus i hope the socket A MB price will come down some. maybe i should just spend a little bit more for a PIII. i see there's 100mhz and 133mhz version of PIII. is the 100mhz version better for o/c?

i was thinking that 300 to 350 cdn was not enough for mobo+cpu. i don't think 300 to 350 US is enough :p

i paid 180 cdn for my bx mobo anyway. but i think some can be had for around 140 - 150 cdn depending on what mobo and where u buy it. maby even cheaper if you buy it locally. a good computer store in canada is http://www.gbcomp.com since his shipping is only 5 bucks. and he is a super nice guy too =) and last i checked he was selling a 566 for 180 cdn

but u may get that for cheaper if u look around, although ive found his prices to be pretty much the cheapest around (he says he will beat other online store's prices if they charge less with shipping + taxes
oh, thats another plus, he dosent charge tax on his parts if you live outside of quebec i belive

celeronII would be about 160 for cpu and 170 for mb?

while duron is 210 for mb and 160 for cpu.

a pIII is like 170 for mb and 270 for a 550E? sounds like a pretty good buy. since i'm getting a whole new system, 100 dollars isn't a big difference especially coz PIII kick duron's ass

Well, if you are counting $300-350 canadian before tax, you can get a Gigabyte GA-7ZM Socket A board and a Duron 650MHz OEM for $168 dollars from www.ncix.com. I have bought stuff from them before and they are a good, reliable place to order from.
