If this happens, nVidia tech paired with Intel's fabrication expertise is going to be hard to overcome -- if the integration goes smoothly. Of course, that's a big if with any merger of this size (including the AMD/ATI deal, of course).

Makes total sense for Nvidia. The room for an independent gpu maker is getting smaller and they need to expand somewhere. The market is shrinking (as a result of better integrated) and consolidating. Best to go gracefully.

to every one saying discrete graphic cards are dying just look at the thread about the 6150 IGP.
nvidia doesnot need intel. same for intel.

ps. from the article about the amd's and intel's fabrication plant methods seems to me amd has the better process and one ati can benifit more from. ofcourse i know nothing of this stuff so.......................

nonsense . . . 10 billion is not chump change for intel . . . if they DO gut nvidia and 'run it into the ground' it could signal their end :p

i don't think it makes much sense for either Intel or nvidia . . . nvidia doesn't bring much to intel - for $10B - what is intel lacking? :p

IF this really happens it could be the best possible news for AMD/ATi ;)

Intel makes 10Billion in net profits in a single year!! Chump change relative to this:

AMD pays for 5.4 Billion (the price they paid for ATI) in 31.5 years. And that using AMD's best year of $165.5 million net profit in 2005.

And if you think AMD will continue to do that well please look at all thier years in the red.

It's not the expertrise so much as economies of scale. It's the same reason intel having 77% of the x86 market generates 99% of the profit.

It would be far from a merger. Intel is huge. NVIDIA would just become another product line. AMD had to take out a loan to buy ATI. Intel could buy NVIDIA out of their petty cash bin and NVIDIA is worth more than ATI.

If that's the case, then couldn't Intel purchase Nvidia AND AMD/ATI?

If someone went after them for antitrust they could just point at Matrox or perhaps IBM. :)

Intel does have the money to purchase nVidia, but there is no guarentee it will ever merge. The most I can see is nVidia just becoming a subsidiary or something off to the side by itself. It's doubtful the government would even approve of a merger of the two considering intel+nvidia would be like a massive monopoly more than it is now.

They will allow the merger, Intel would cry foul at the ATi/AMD merger.

They have more than enough money to pour into the right pockets and let them "forget" nicely about any type of monopoly!

well intel-nvidia vs AMD-ATI should be interesting if it ever happens.
The prospect is interesting but intel would have to deal with a lot of issues such as anti-trust,market monopoly etc....
Frankly i would have been happy if all of them were left as they were,i.e seperately.As in no AMD-ATI merger.
Oh well,anything can happen.

Here is an interesting question: In the graphics card market, nVidia has always been regarded as better than ATI when it comes to Linux support. Yet, ATI has always been more linux-friendly than Intel. I wonder which company will wind up with better Linux support?

Why couldn't AMD buy nVidia, and then let Intel have ATI? That way, my choice of hardware for running Linux would be much easier.

OMG! Well, I'd be nicer if companies stayed seperate, but I can't say teaming up with Intel would be a bad thing for NVidia - it might hopefully mean better quality products that don't crash like the dodgy 7900's.
