Hey guys I usually connect at 54.6kbps(At least that is what the status says) so I am pretty sure that I am maxed out but not sure. Would getting a V.92 modem help any?? I don't think so but please just lmk your thoughts. Thanks for the help and time

Dude if your connecting at 54.6....leave it be, thats the best you'll get, new modem maybe worse.

That's strange. 53K is the current legal limit (and has been for years) 56k is just a theoretical limit. How are you connecting at 54.6 when the phone companies have it restricted by law???
+++++
EDIT: The 53K limit is an FCC restriction that I've read is somewhat of a "myth". It appears folks have connected at 54.6. Not for me when I had a modem, 52 was tops and 49 or less was more likeley. If your getting 54.6 from a modem, your doing as good as you possibly can without going broadband.

Multilink = Shotgun technology, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just assuming. two modems are connected to two different lines to provide twice the bandwidth. :)

Off topic. :D

Rice it. :D

I believe v.92 modems increase the upstead bandwidth quite significantly. This will probably make more of a difference than .1K/sec higher connection speeds. I think it would make the biggest difference in latency.

v.90 uploads at 3.3k/sec while v.92 allows uploads of 4.8k/sec. thats the only difference

kehi,
Your modem is most likely reporting the DTE speed (max com port speed) and not the actuall connection speed. This is usually due to using a generic modem driver. Actual reported connection speeds are a bit irrelevent however as it's only the max speed possible sampled for the small amount of time during the handshaking process. Due to modem retraining, the actual connection speed can vary quite a bit during any paticular internet session.
V.92 modems upload faster due to the more effeicent V.44 compression used by these modems. Since most downloaded data is allready compressed in some manner, better hardware compression won't help much.

Try upgrading your driver to the latest version, Willoughbyva.
kehi, if you can connect at 54.6, I wouldn't be complaining if I were you. It's not worth upgrading because you wouldn't befinit much compare to the amount of money spent on a new modem.

I wouldn't complain too much. best I ever got was 52 which I thought was great. but if you are experiencing slow downloads and uploads then it could be that your modem is downshifting and upshifting the speeds too much. might want to try only allowing it to connect at a slower speed so it doesn't have to change "gears" so much. a place of source for xp tweaks is www.tweakxp.com in their forum they have some great articles and links on how to get better speeds. v92 will increase ur upload speed. but it won't do anything for you if your isp doesn't support v92 so then its pointless to get it I think

I doubt you can improve, the speed is pretty much dictated by your location and the quality of the lines to your house. My AMD Tbird system with external USR modem get only 26,400 kbps(btw, no broadband is allow in my area it seems)) while someone in another location with 486 and a cheap internal 56k modem get a full 53,000 kbps.
