I know this is not the correct forum for this...but..I posted on the "Software" forum & it seems like it's a bunch of 16 yr olds into nothing but gaming.
Sooooo I thought I'd try hear, just in case someone might have run into this before.
Here's the story.
I've got an old Win98SE Box on a network.
It refuses to recognize the internet and when I try to ping any address from within a DOS box, the box immediately closes down and an error message pops up saying "The ICMP.DLL file cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem"
I replaced the file thinking it was bad, but I'm still getting the same error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
Edit: This had the same problem when it was running Win98 so I upgraded it to Win98SE...still gives the same error message. :)

Are you running TCP/IP protocol on your network? Try uninstalling the TCP/IP protocol for your network and then try connecting to the internet.

Is this install an upgrade from Win95? Just Curious. Because only reference I find stems all the way back to Win95, but does seem to target your problem. Looks like you have a corrupt Wsock32.dll (virus replaced maybe) - well here is the text. You decide......

SYMPTOMS
When you use the Ping.exe tool included with Windows 95, you may receive any of the following error messages:

The Icmp.dll file cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem.
Unable to initialize Windows Sockets interface, error code 6.
Note that the first error message may be misleading because the Icmp.dll file may not be the cause of the problem; replacing it may not resolve the issue.

CAUSE
The Wsock32.dll file may have been damaged or have been replaced by a third-party program.

RESOLUTION
Use the Extract tool to extract a new copy of the Wsock32.dll file from your original Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder.

For information about using the Extract tool, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Hope this helps.........

WarCon,
Thanks for the info! :)
I found the same info late last night on the MS site.
I'm going to replace the Wsock32.dll today.
