I know these are old and tired, but yet another tech support rant

I jumped in our tech support queue to answer some calls because people were waiting so long. I get this lady, and she's your typical "I don't know how to use a mouse, I don't know how to double click, I don't know how to read three words" etc.

I hear this all the time and accept it. However, I asked her during a reboot how long she's had her computer, and she said she's been using it everyday for 4 years.

HOW CAN YOU USE SOMETHING THAT LONG AND NOT KNOW HOW IT WORKS???? Wow. A computer is the only device I can think of that someone will pay $$$$ for and expect someone else to run it for them.

Amazing.

No matter how many of these I read I almost always enjoy them, but I have to say this one was a real let-down.

Although you make a completely valid point, I score you at 2/10.

another wonder of high paid management with no fucking clue:

get a call due to someone's mouse and keyboard not working. they tell the tech that they did nothing and it just stopped working. Tech goes through the motions on the phone including having them resync to the wireless receiver.

Tech has to make the trip out...turns out they never did anything the tech asked them to do as they unplugged the wireless receiver and put it in their desk drawer because it got in the way.

Their response was they wanted a REAL wireless setup as this has 'wires'.

That's the new 802.11W protocol. It offers much higher throughput than previous wireless protocols. However, the range tends to be restricted, and it needs a few copper conductors to effectively channel the wireless signal.

hehe - I've had some of those. I even has one customer that complained "I bought one with all the wireless features!" when I told her we would still need to run a cable from the tower to the monitor

Hush now - or the magic box will get mad at you for trying to decipher its cryptic workings

bluetooth is already doing this...but we aren't plopping down BT as the PC's don't have it.

I do tech support as well and yeah its really sad how people are ignorant about computers. And it seems to only happen with computers.

I'm not a mechanic and know next to nothing about cars. My wipers were making this scratching sound, I did not bring it in the garage and say the brakes are not working. It's common sense, every time I use the wipers it made that sound, so I knew to look there, and saw the metal part sticking out, so came to conclusion they're falling apart when I looked further, so I did a temp fix and just played around and fixed them. I troubleshooted a very simple problem myself even though I don't specialize in cars.

Why can't people do this with computers? You don't need to be a "IT guy" to troubleshoot basic problems or know how to do a basic task.

On the bright side I do enjoy tech support, stupid people brighten up my day. :D

On Friday I had a PC that wouldn't POST. After taking everything out of the system and getting down to the processor I discovered the heatsink had 3 of the 4 latches all the way down with 1 somewhat bent. Took off the heatsink - went to pop open the CPU latch and it sprung open faster than any I've seen before.

Turns out the guy left the plastic cover on his new Q6600 and somehow managed to snap it all together. No wonder it wouldn't POST. Luckily it worked fine once I removed that spare part. ;)

The secretaries and attorneys in my office literally use the computer to make their living. However, almost zero of the secretaries or attorneys I have worked with over that past 12+ years have knowledge beyond even the most basic tasks (and most of those they do wrong (like spaces instead of tabs)).

And G-d help you if move one of their desktop icons!!!

I am just amazed as to how little they know about the most important tool in their lives. I am even more amazed as to how little motivation they seem to have to learn more.

Then there is my father-in-law, a retired CPA, who knows how to do things with Excel that I did not even know it could do. That is only because he spent hours and hours looking in the manual (someone looks at the Excel manual!?!) and calling MS. He then has those tasks written down and he follows the instructions step by step. However, when he upgraded Office, some of the steps changed slightly (and I mean slightly) and he was lost. He literally started all over again.

When I went over to his house some time later, even though I had never performed those tasks before, based solely on his prior notes and my innate abilities , I was able to fill in the blanks on all of the remaining tasks in mere moments.

Instead of the ability to fly or see through walls, I can operate a computer.
