Did you do anything for your SO?

The radio got me thinking about it, because my gf and I agreed not to do anything (I didn't plan on it for a fake holiday anyways). So I had to stop by her work on Sweetest Day to get the dog leashes she had in her car, and while she is going to get them out of her purse I am talking to some of her co-workers. One of them asks, "Did you get her anything for Sweetest Day?" I tell them no, because we agreed not to do anything. When I said that the guy said "oh I figured you would still get something."

My gf later that night seemed like she expected something because it's "Sweetest Day", and all her coworkers asked her what I got her.

Went out to dinner and I bought her some flowers.

Nothing too out of the ordinary, except I don't usually buy her flowers for no reason, lol.

Sweetest day is a Hallmark holiday invented by candymakers to give another reason for people to buy candy. It's only celebrated in a few cities in the NE of the US.

Hmm, well I thought this was a nationwide thing, but this explains it:

It originated in Cleveland, and I'm only like 30 minutes or so from there, so that's probably why It's still thrown around here.

I think I remember hearing about "Sweetest Day" last year and then promptly forgot about the fact that it exists.

Thanks, I had been curious about Sweetest Day for the last week, but I was too lazy to search for it.

I flew to Detriot for a wedding on last Saturday. Everywhere I went I saw Sweetest Day balloons, flowers, etc. No one at the wedding that I spoke to had any clue what Sweetest Day was (Detroit was almost a destination wedding, most guests didn't live anywhere near it, including the families).

The fact that it is a local great lakes holiday now makes sense.

I cooked dinner. Then again, I cook dinner every night.
My wife did get me a card and told me to get her one. I looked at her and told her it was a dumb 'holiday' and that I wouldn't waste my money on it.

I grew up not far from Cleveland and I remember it as "give candy to the poor and sick". In school we used to make cards for the old people in the old folks home, and somebody donated tons of little boxes of candy. Even at an early age I was confused, why are we giving candy to people who are old and sick and probably shouldn't be eating the stuff.

Moving to NY/NJ was the first time I noticed the cards for your sweetie thing. Not at all what I knew from childhood.

I've never heard of sweetest day, but it just so happens I bought my SO a dozen roses that day (local Rotary Club was selling them for charity).
