What (little) I've discovered that I like so far:
-The Streets
-Eminem
-Jay-Z
-Kanye West
-Gorillaz
I know, boring and mainstream, right? So help me out.

What I do not want:
-repetitive lyrics
-annoying, crappy R&B whenever the artist gets too lazy to write another verse
-misogyny/homophobia/an overabundance of over the top offensive profanity just because the artist is a lazy bigot with a four-letter vocabulary and a rhyming dictionary
-tone-deaf gangster rap without any ear for lyrical music

Right, now that I've ruled out 90% of the crappy stuff, recommend me your favorites. Collaborations/mashups with rock songs are always nice too, ease me in to the genre.

edit: If you know any foreign-language artists, I'm all for those, too.

NAS
Tupac
The Roots
Deftron
Jay Z

edit: i was never a fan of biggie, i just hated his music. Tupac seems to have more flowing rhymes.

I like all the artists you've listed here, OP.

Some of my favorite hip-hop albums the last 6ish years:

Soundbombing 2 (Rawkus Records, various artists)
Beat Junkies Volume 3 (Rawkus Recods, various artists)
"Madvillainy" - Madvillain (MF Doom aka Viktor Vaughn)
"Black Star" - Black Star
"Black on Both Sides" - Mos Def
"2000 Fold" - Styles of Beyond

With the exceptionof Madvillainy the other albums aren't new by any means, but they would fit with your tastes IMO.

If you do not already own Nas- Illmatic, definitely get it. One of the best hip-hop albums of all time. I could list you a ton of good stuff to check out, but I want to make sure you have Illmatic first, lol. Also, I would highly suggest checking out Sticky Fingaz. I mention him because he is definitely one of the most underrated artists in hip-hop.

Right now I'm listening to Canibus - Rip the Jacker. I would highly recommend that too.

Jedi Mind Tricks for sure. I've just got into them recently. I like Lil Wayne too. All of the previous suggestions are definitely worth checking out.

The *original* mashup was "Walk this way" with Run DMC and Aerosmith. Another notable one is "Bring the Noise" with Anthrax and Public Enemy.

If you want a great CD full of rock/hip hop fusion check out the "Judgement Night" soundtrack.

It's probably one of the best soundtracks ever composed since it has actual original songs and not just a bunch of hand picked radio friendly turds polished up and slapped on CD.
