updated question:
To turn the ipod into a little stereo... Getting a "3rd generation nano 8gb" whatever tf that means.

Any recommendations for computer speakers? Should I get a powered set with a subwoofer? We're heading to Rochester in a few hours to do our Christmas shopping; I'd love to leave the house with all those decisions made (rather than having to figure these things out in a crowded store.) I *hate* shopping.

Xmas presents for my sons.

A) We have Verizon Wireless (one of those family plan thingies) with unlimited text messaging. I personally don't have any need or use for a cell phone, so I've paid absolutely zero attention to the market. (Thus, apologies for being a complete noob.)

Here's what my son wants (I think): Something with one of those keypads that pulls out, plus some pda capabilities. He's a typical 16 year old boy. Any ideas for a phone? And, best place to purchase it?

B) Son is heading to college in September. Wants an ipod for xmas. I know *nothing* about ipods except that there are tons of "free ipod" scams out there. Point me in the right direction?? (Also, something about a docking station and speakers?)

As far as the phone, go to a Verizon store and check out their selection. Ask the people there what all the kids are using. You can't really get a good deal on Verizon phones anywhere without signing a new contract which isn't your case. Verizon also has a somewhat limited selection of phones so it shouldn't be too hard to pick one out with a keyboard for him.

For the iPod, do you know what kind of iPod he wants? The touch, nano or classic? Once you ind that out, just browse around for the best price. For speakers a cheapish pair of computer speakers will serve the ipod well as far as a mini stereo setup goes. You don't need to spend a bunch of money on one of those dock speaker sets. I'd say 50 bucks could get you a very nice set of stereo computer speakers.

Give them gift cards from the Verizon store and let them pick their own.

I hate receiving gift cards for Christmas, and I hate the idea of giving gift cards for Christmas. It's the easy way out: give a gift card and let them go to the trouble of picking out a phone. Instead, I'd rather put in the effort to pick out the ideal phone.
(Oh, and Ipod 3rd gen nano 8 gb)

Updated OP with different question now . Thanks, only CO

If he's planning on using the speakers say in his dorm room full time then yeah a powered sub and speakers would be perfect. Especially if he's going to have a computer because then they will work for both. Unless he specifically stated he wanted one of those nightstand speaker sets or something. But if he's like most college kids he'll want to pump the jams, so a powered set will do.
