I know I've said it before, but I really hate Toshiba

So after a disappointing 5 bulbs in just around 2.5 years, she finally bit the dust today. Turns on and does the ever so annoying 'Green light flashing', reboots, 'Green light flashing', reboots... etc. Does this about 10 times, then comes back on and just flashes the red and green light in sync endlessly.

From my searches, and from a quick gander at the bulb which is still looking pristine, its now either my video board, my power supply, or god knows what else. I'm done sinking money into this pit of hell, just to have something else go wrong 4-6 months later.

Never again will I buy a TV without an extended warranty.
Never again will I buy a Toshiba.

Grrrr.

Guess its a good thing BB just sent me a 12% off coupon :)

Obviously something was wrong with it from the beginning. TVs don't just burn through bulbs. It has probably been the power supply all along. Open it up and look for busted caps.

I try not to make judgments based on one bad experience, but that does sound pretty crappy.

My only bad TV experience was with a Sony XBR-II CRT. It died within the first few months, and after it was repaired under BB warranty (they used a 3rd-party group), the picture looked like poo.

My brother has something like a 36" Toshiba from the early 90s that still kicks butt, it's in his garage for football/beer/darts nights.

There's a 256 page thread over at AVS just filled to the brim with different issues with this series Toshiba TV's.

Toshiba originally blamed the bulbs and issued a recall, but even the replacement "fixed" bulbs were burning out on many of us within 4-6 months.

Sorry to hear you had such bad luck with a Toshiba. I just semi-retired a Toshiba 36 inch CRT made in 1997 and had the first color-stream inputs (component) on it for DVD players. I never had a single problem with it until I hooked up my new Dish HD DVR and used this set as my second TV on the dual tuner DVR. The signal coming from the 2nd tuner on the DVR is SD and made the picture flicker occasionally. Other wise, the TV still works perfectly and gets a great picture. I thought it had a better picture than the Trinitrons when I bought it. And the Trinitrons did not add specific component DVD inputs until a year or 2 after I bought this TV.

I think the problem with projection and projector technologies is they bring them to market so fast year after year, that they never really have the chance to see how the new model projection TVs last that they just redesigned. I think all manufacturers of projection TVs suffered in this regard. And also most of them did not make the bulbs for the TVs so quality control flew out the window when they outsourced this vital part.

When I bought a projection screen, I bought a Apex 480p HD 43" CRT one, and the thing just refused to stop working 5 years later, lol. Look at the terrible reviews of this set: Apex GB4303
And I think the biggest problem was these TVs were not delivery friendly. I bought mine at Sears and took it home in my truck and it has worked perfectly ever since. The picture was actually pretty good once it was set up on the convergence properly. Which is why I bought one. The beast will not die, heh.

Debating what to do in the meantime, I'm gonna hold off a few weeks on a new tv. Too busy at the moment to really use the new tv anyway.

Put the 46" in the closet for the time being and throw our kickass 10 year old 20" JVC on the huge tv stand in the living room ;) lol, i'm actually looking forward to how retarded it will look

Or, leave it as is and just move the HD DVR upstairs so my wife can still watch her shows.

Hmmm

So after being fairly sure my Toshiba DLP was dead for good and not wanting to spend any more money to fix it, I managed to snag a used bulb from my friends dead Toshiba DLP (same model) and sure enough, tried the bulb and amazingly it worked. As I've been though this unfortunately many times, I was fairly certain it wasn't the bulb this time, and to an extent, I still think I'm right as it doesn't turn on every time and still reboots the first few times it turns on.

Anyway, I think i'm just gonna throw the two tv's (one halfway working, the other broken) up on Craigslist as a pair. Make sure whoever buys it knows full well they it has issues, selling it AS IS, and only accept cash. As long as I'm upfront about the problems, hopefully someone will want to take them off my hands cheap.

I'd like to ammend this. The friends bulb died today as well, it was used about 2 weeks in my tv and only about 3 months in his. That brings my TV to a grand total of around 7 bulbs in UNDER 3 years. Sickening.

Never again.

Yikes, Samsung DLPs seem to be much better than at least that Toshiba model.

My brother's first bulb lasted three years, mine is still OK after 2 years though it looks like my light engine has issues.

Luckily I bought the extended warranty from Circuit City. After a quick call this morning to a customer service rep (surprisingly -not- in India) they're supposed to be sending a tech out Tuesday.

I thought you were going to sell it. Why the hell do you keep throwing new bulbs in there!?! The TV is defective. Stop putting in new bulbs until you either get it fixed or sell/give it to someone who knows how to fix it. It's going to keep blowing bulbs until the underlying problem is fixed.

I've been trying, no luck yet. I figured the bulbs would blow in 6-8 months like usual, not in 2 weeks or less. I chose un-wisely :)
