I know its been asked before, but I really want to know for sure.

I am ordering hard drive(s) from NewEgg tonight and I am still unsure which way to go. I am going to use a ABIT KR7133 raid motherboard so here is the options:

1. Two Maxtor 60GB 133ATA "Quiet Drives" using raid = 120GB --$206

2. One Western Digital 120GB "Special Edition" 8Mb -- $211

I don't want to hear "Maxtor is terrible use WD" or "WD is terrible use Maxtor". 😉 As far as I am concerned, they are both good drives. They are the same size (120GB) and same price (within $5), so what I want I know is which way will give me the best performance -- period. I am just looking for facts here, so if you have data or a link to back up your preference would be helpfull.

I'd go with best single drive. Purchasing two small slower drives to raid together means their life span is limited to them being usefull only as two raided drives to you. Purchase a fast single drive now and you can always (someday if you decide it is good then) raid it with another 120 GB drive when it becomes to slow for the day or to small. In other words, 2 slower/smaller drives forces you to raid them now whereas one faster drive gives you flexibility and extends the usefull life it represents to you.

dude, that WD with 8mb of cache is FRICKIN' FAST! get the 120 GB Western Digital!!!! and i had no idea the 120 GB special edition was that cheap now, i'd better consult my credit card.

Here's another vote for the WD 120Gig. I believe RAID implementations in IDE (0, 1, 0+1) are just a marketing shtick unless you're doing highend video editing where you're writing huge amounts of data frequently. In most cases, the Maxtor 60Gigs in RAID will be slower than the single WD drive.

Definatly WD I have a Maxtor 40 gig love it but if i have the choice to raid or not to raid i'd go no raid esspeccially if the WD will work just as well if not better.

Go with the maxtors. Then not only do you have 120 gigs of space but you have a raid system to make everyone else jealous.

I thought with a raid setup he would only have 60 GB??? of useable space???

If you use 2 Maxtor 60Gig drives in Raid 0 then you will get 120gigs of space, but if it's Raid 1, you will only get 60(striping vs. mirroring).
