CD's, govt. bonds, tax shelters, blah blah blah... I finally have enough money to start saving and have no bloody idea what to do with it. Anyone here capable of giving a primer - Investing for Complete Blithering Imbecils?

Go to the library and check out some books on investing. There are as many plans as there are people. The safest way to start, though, is buying mutual funds.

Vangaurd family of mutual funds are considered by most "value" investors the safest and most prudent in this market right now.

Yep, another vote for Vanguard -- time it right and you can pick up some VFINX cheap during the war jitters, great for a long-term investment.

If you're only investing short-term you might be better of with a zero-risk (but low-profit) investment like an account at www.INGdirect.com or a bank CD from www.etradebank.com

www.fool.com does have some good content.

if you're going to go with VFINX, just go with SPYders

dont buy AMD, they'll be lucky if they dont go under considering they burned thru most of their cash in the last 6 months and have less than 6 months of $ left.
