Willis Haviland Carrier, a gentleman from New York, helped make the South a better place to live. This man is a hero. :D

Does this help explain why we seem to see so many weird stories and fails coming out of Florida? :p

The study found that worker productivity is highest at about 72 degrees. When temperatures exceeded the mid-80s, worker productivity decreased by about 9 percent.
Well sheit, I'd definitely be uncomfortable working in mid 80s temperatures. Doesn't surprise me at all, I bet my whole office would be complaining and productivity would go down.

Does this explain why nearly all the 3rd world nations are located on or near the equator?

There's other theories about that. Like malaria, and other tropical diseases. But this could be part of it too.

Honestly it makes sense. I do find my thinking is not rational, is slower, and my physical movements are also much slower when it's too hot. It took me a week to put a couple 2x4's on a wall for shelves in my shed in this heat. Meanwhile I framed and sheathed the whole thing in -20's and even -30's some days. On a cooler day I can just rip through a project and be much more productive. When it's hot, not so much.

Intense heat also makes you just miserable in general. Like in an office if the A/C breaks down productivity is more than likely going to suffer somewhat.

Not necessarily. Maybe without air conditioning the people living in the south would not be able to live in the south and they'd live somewhere not infested with Florida Man.

Any energy spent regulating body temperature is energy diverted away from core functions. I run 20-25 miles a week. You can plot a 1:1 correlation to my per mile pace and temperature. As the temp starts getting above 68 degrees my pacing starts to really drop. Once you push past 75 degrees (and humidity in particular) it really starts to tank badly. It just takes more for your body to regulate temp and that cuts down on your efficiency. Being cold isn't as much of an issue. Exertion naturally produces heat and you'll hit an equilibrium pretty quickly so long as it doesn't go below a certain temp. For me once it starts going below 18 degrees my body can't keep up with heat wicking and I'll start getting cold on underprotected areas. My performance isn't really effected once I get my body temp up and muscles are warmed.

Directly about this study - I have to think that the non-ac rooms were more due to poor sleep than anything else. If it's hot your a lot more restless in your sleep and won't hit as deep a slumber. That has a direct impact in cognitive functioning. Take that over a week + and it just compounds.

It was like 5 degrees this morning. It was a tad chilly getting off work in only shorts and tshirt. It's back to hot temps though, 23 right now and suppose to go back in the 30's.

Scarface was a documentary. The heat fries people's brains, for real.

That's insane. 54C is around how hot the main plenum of my furnace gets when it's running. I don't know why or how people live in places that get that hot. I actually prefer -20's and -30's over intense heat. At least you can somewhat dress for cold temps like that and stay relatively warm if you do physical activity.

I'm guessing it was overestimated since it was so extreme, but it gets that hot with the heat index regularly in the South. I'd rather that than snow. Between the cold and the darkness I honestly doubt I'd make it through the winter where you are. I get gloomy during the winters at 30°N.

I'll give you that, the lack of light does suck here. We get tons of light in summer but it's only for a few months. Though I think I'll still take it over being constantly drenched in my own sweat and practically drowning in it.

I need a temperature conversion chart to understand this :)
