"Look at the kind of contribution that people like Henry Kissinger have made, Madeleine Albright," he said, referring to two former secretaries of state who were born in Europe.

Is he kidding? That should be a reason not to allow foreign-born especially Europeans to be president... Kissinger is a war criminal.

I'd be happy with a moderate of either party if I can't get my Libertarian in office...could care less where they were born

I just have this gut feeling that the Framers of the Constitution wanted the office of the Presidency to be reserved for native-born Americans for good reason. I just don't feel right about a Constitutional Amendment for this. I would vote against such a thing, no matter how popular Schwarzenegger is.

I think it should be allowed. Especially in the case when children are very young and immigrate over with their parents. Usually they consider themselves Americans.

I would have to agree. I moved to America when I was only 6 months, and although I have no presidential aspirations it seems almost ludicrious that I shoudl nto have the right to participate in the political process to the point where I could run for president.

Again I would have to agree with heartsurgeon. Although the law is somewhat outdated, an amendment would have nowhere near the amount of support it would require. Plus there are plenty of qualified native borns.

I don't know what reality you are part of but 9/11 is the new reality and I don't see why a terrorist action like hijacking our planes and attacking our own soil wouldn't evolve into a "sleeper" running for office. It only makes sense. But hey, we will just chose to live in your flower garden of denial and just trust that no one will want to hurt us.

The major points are this:

1) its unfair non US born citizens, no matter how you spin it (that includes the fact that people like John Lyndh exist)
2) the lives of presidential candidates are put under such incredible scrutiny, that a sleeper could never hide his past.
3) even if a sleeper somehow got elected despite the astronomical improbability, you are ignoring that a single person at the top can't do much.

So by sleeper, you mean a man who is elected to the presidency through deceit, and proceeds to destroy the underpinnings of american society...? ;)

Get over it... He lost fair and square. If the roles were reversed you'd be fine with it. It is the reality of the electoral vote.... I don't like it but it is the system in place right now.

Unfair.... To hell with FAIR... Fair exists in theory only. Nothing is "fair". Some babies are born healthy, other missing limbs and others still with half a brain. You wanna talk about fair? How about the 3000+ who lost their lives on 9/11... I am so damn tired of the US feeling the need to cower to vocal minorities. NEA "We think that the government should pony $$ to cover the cost of our exhibit entitled "Men who love men who love mice" ALA We shouldn't have to block adult content from 12 year olds, that is censorship. stupid individualI demand that the government enforce strict warning labels. I didn't know that I wasn't supposed to use my hair dryer as a room heater! some blind peopleThe movie Mr Magoo portrays blind people as bumbling fools and it is hurtful to our plight.

Besides all that... (and please correct me if I am wrong) What country other than countries currently in a civil war, has a foreign-born leader? It is probably because it isn't good practice to allow someone that isn't locally born to be the leader of the country.

I don't expect anyone to be swayed by my view... Just posting it.

Bad idea to allow foreigners into the top position, even if they have a long residency. Especially when it is a foreigner asking for the opportunity, a foreigner whose claim to fame is not even the result of proven leadership. Hell, he has barely even been a Governor and he already has his eyes set on the White House! Add-in his well known childhood dreams and meanderings and he starts to seem rather creepy. :)

[tinfoil hat] Let us also consider another thing. If Germany had a similar stipulation banning Foreigners, the Austrian Adolf Hitler would never have risen to power in Germany. Coincidently, Arnold has been known to make certain comments favorable towards his historical Countryman. Don't be in a rush to allow such a change, Arnold is in a powerful enough position, he doesn't need a position that the Bush Admin has pre-conditioned quite nicely for a Hitlerian to take power and justify certain requirements for Atrocity.
