So I made some moro de habichuelas for dinner tonight and it really clicked with me.
I'm Slovak and Italian and as much as i really like the food from those countries, I love Dominican (and pretty much and hispanic country) food far more.
Through the week I had to have a presentation for a Spanish class I'm taking (easy elective and a change of pace from my graduate level biochemistry courses) and I talked about the Domincan Republic for about 20 minutes and then served some bizcocho criolla.
I almost feel like I'm cheating on my heritage.

Oh yeah, moro de habichuelas = black beans and rice and bizcocho criolla is a dominican style pound cake (the national cake in fact)

There he goes with the Snapple facts.

Listen, you seem like a good kid. If you're that serious then go and visit a South American country and leave the tourist areas. Let me know if you feel the same way after you get back.

The food is tasy but onyl the rich get to enjoy it in such fashion.

<--product of a family that subsisted on Beans, cream, torillas, cheese, and eggs. When they came to the States they went all out and mixed in French Bread / baggets.

Well more than that...the culture, the art, I just relate more with it than my own heritage...The whole point of taking Spanish fluency classes for a potential trip to Spain after graduation in the hopes of actually being able to enjoy the trip and be more than just a bumbling American while there.

You're Italian and don't relate to your heritage? I'm Italian as well. We have a pretty rich background, what with the whole saving civilization twice thing. The food's pretty fucking amazing too.

I was in Spain the last week of June and we visited Madrid, Sevilla, Toledo, and Granada.

I loved Spain and would really like to go back someday. It's a beautiful country with such a strong culture and wonderful people with a strong sense of national pride. It's a very green country too. You won't find any urban sprawl like you do here and you'll see almost no SUVs of any kind and zero pickup trucks.

You'll definitely need to speak some Spanish though as very few people there speak English. They'll appreciate the fact that you've actually made some effort to learn and speak their language though. I found the Spanish people to be very hospitable and friendly.

I guess I've grown used to it having been around it my entire life. I also get a never ending stream of "you're Italian, you certainly don't look it" Followed by my explaination of how Sicilians are a whole different bread ect ect ect....

No you don't. As you've clearly discovered, you don't have to be hispanic to eat that food. On the other hand, having a spanish name on your resume will make it harder for you to get a job interview. In case you haven't noticed, latinos aren't too popular in this country.

I love people of hispanic heritage. I made friends with a hispanic neighbor by fixing his computer for him gratis one day (it came up in conversation) - after that his wife showered us for 3 years with the most delightful food . . . they'd just bring it by - I got invited to all of his backyard parties (which rocked - I was the only white guy there) . . . and well the people as a whole are some of the nicest and sweetest you'd ever meet - and they can cook very well. Then I'd bring them by pots of my texas chili which they loved, and my wife would send over cheescakes. . . We were all in food heaven. . . This wife of his makes the best handmade tamales (and that isn't easy to do). . .All of the worked extremely hard to get what they had . . . still most of my friends are hispanic. . .
