long story short i moved to kansas, got divorced, ill be moving home and have...nothing

mostly. most of my furniture isnt worth moving, except for a nice oak dining set my parents handed down to me. they had it for 20 years, i love it. im considering taking it with me if the cost isnt going to kill me. but i have *no idea* where to look to get this done, or what a reasonable fee for it would be?

anyone ever done something like this?

Have you checked with FedEx Freight?

Also, where about in Kansas and where to in NC? I can check our outgoing trucks to see if we have any space (if areas are close, of course).

Let me check with the dispatchers we work with to see if I can find anything close to those areas. No guarantees, but I'll look into it.

Dollar for dollar, it would be cheaper to put a hitch on the sable and buy a small trailer, wrap the set up very securely in blankets and tarps, and tow it home. Sell the trailer when you get home, and you're only out the cost of the hitch. A sable should be able to handle a 1200 pound load.

Consider doing a one-way UHaul rental and driving it yourself. You probably don't need a van, just a trailer.

If not, consider FreighQuote. They are on the expensive side, but better than FedEX freight or UPS Frieght.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://www.freightquote.com/Default.aspx"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://www.freightquote.com/Default.aspx">https://www.freightquote.com/Default.aspx</a></a>

Also consider Arnell Carriers (1-800-940-7811). They should have some backhauls from the midwest back to the East coast.

Most truckers charge a minimum weight....some have a minimum of 1000-2000 lbs. So even if they quote you a certain $/100 lbs. rate, realize they will charge you the minimum.

A lot of furniture ships out of NC (Burlington, Highpoint, etc.). See if you can talk to any furniture dealers in your area who receive regular deliveries. If they do, then they probably have a trucker they use regularly. You might be able to get someone to backhaul it to NC cheap.

But considering it is only one dining table, the haul-it-yourself option is the best it seems.

I like your way of thinking...we would appreciate the business.

You will need to have it properly crated before it can be shipped. Shipping cost will be a couple hundred bucks for sure. If i could i would let you use my ~75% discount but I don't think it would be possible in this case.

I ran an online moving brokerage. The typical minimum is around $1000, sometimes a bit less. I see enough $$ there to do that easily, plus you can put some of the stuff you planned on cramming in the car on the trailer.

Hey, I was just in Abilene last weekend. :)
"Bye Bye Birdie" was pretty good, at the Great Plains Theater.

Good luck with the move.
