And I'm not looking for government cheese. I'm not even really looking for a new car at this point. The Nissan Leaf does interest me though and I'd gladly take advantage of the government incentives. You'd have to be an idiot not to.

Isn't it ironic that the same people that you scoff at are the people that may(directly or indirectly)help you buy your next car.

Hell, my daily driver gets around 20-21mpg and I commute 60 miles a day to and from work.

Weren't there tax incentives for driving giant SUVs that designed to tow the space shuttle as a commuter vehicle for quite awhile? Government wastes a lot of money on a lot of stupid shit, but I don't feel like spending some money to bootstrap industry into building different kinds of fuel efficient cars is one of them. If gas costs $6 a gallon or something in 10 years I think most people will be glad there is already some technology in place that can help.

One thing I think the government is overboard on is emission standards. New cars are already pretty good on this and I recall reading old power plants and cargo shits do way more damage than the auto fleet does at this point.

Um, I'm considering a Nissan Leaf to replace it. I've had this car for 8+ years. When I bought it I was commuting 10 miles to work and doing 2-3 days a week on a bicycle.

Been working at the new job for a little over a year now.

By the way, the Federal government has been promoting these green initiatives for decades. My Mom had a solar water heating system installed in our house in the mid-1980s largely in part due to tax incentives.

Democrat, Republican, they both seem to support these types of programs and have been for decades.

Besides, it's not all bad. Nissan is building a new plant in Tennesee to build the Leaf starting with the 2012 model year. Your tax dollars are incentivising job creation here. You are also helping employ Electricians who will install the charging stations. Plus, Leaf owners won't be sitting in line at Costco in front of you waiting to fill up.

So far, Leaf and Volt sales seem to be underwhelming.

I think an all electric car that looks fairly normal, like the Focus, may be a more popular idea.
