First of all: I couldn't figure out where to put this becuase their is no audio forum, so I will try to find an answer here.

Sometimes when I plug in or unplug my headphones to the back of my computer, it reboots or freezes my computer... earlier today, I tripped over my headphones which made my computer freeze. When I tried to reboot, it would freeze during the slide bar graphic... I dropped drown from 1400 (133fsb, 10.5x) to 1050 (100fsb, 10.5x) and it boot fine... but now my sound is gone.. All I get a wierd feedback sound whenever I adjust the volume on my headphones (I have a slider on my headphone cable). I have tried the following:

Differant headphones
Changing PCI slots
Reinstalling drivers
formatting
Using onboard audio (i get same feedback)

Any recommendations on where to start? (I can't really get another sound card, because everyone else has the same card)

About to reboot, and set back to 1400 Mhz and see if I can boot after I formatted...

Setup:

Windows XP Proffesional
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 (X-Gamer)
AMD Athlon @ 1050MHz

As I stated, I have both removed the card and replaced it, and tried using onboard sound.. none seem to work... and I have tried differant headphones, so that's not it eigther..

But, I'm not really great about setting up onboard sound... maybe I did it wrong, can someone walk me through what I do when I have my SB Live! 5.1 in and have onboard sound on my EPoX 8K7A.

I tried to update the drivers today for my onboard sound, but it keeps saying to "Enable onboard sound in the BIOS." Thing is, it is enabled both the "AC97 Audio" and "Onboard Sound" options... any ideas why it wouldn't detect anything?

Since your card is toast anyway, you can try to fix it without risking much.

My guess is that you have just broken the plug where the headphones are connected. The rest of the card is probably fine.

You can try your hand at soldering on a new connector - or, as a quick fix, break open the little plastic case the connector goes in, and bend back the metal strips so that the headphone plug has good contact.

PS: the title of this thread sounds like an advertisment for the new movie "Silence of the Amps" ;).
