I keep losing my DSL connection

I have called tch support 3 times with no real help. I will be surfing and suddeny a page won't load. Try more websites and they won't load. I disconnect and reconnect, and I can surf again for a while. The real problem is online gaming. I keep getting disconnected from the server (has happened on several different servers). I might be able to play for a couple of hours with no problem, or maybe only a few minutes. It really seems random. The modem lights stay active thru this though. I do not have a router or any firewall except for the XP firewall.
What I have tried so far in order:
Complete virus/spyware scan with no problems found.
System restore to a date where I believe was prior to this starting.
Reinstall DSL software.
Uninstall if XP SP2 (tech support reccomendation).
Delete and reinstall DSL connection.

Any ideas? Could it be the modem going bad? I've thought about a reformat, but not sure if that would work.

do u have wireless cause that could be the problem maybe its your isp if not i would say reformat that is what i do when i am too lazy to figure out what is wrong

If your adware/spyware solutions were any good, they would have detected that crap SBC installs on your system with their "dsl software".😉

Have you had your line checked? The problems you are talking about ussually happen on a bad line. Whenever my DSL goes out its because I have static on my line (Pick up my reciever and hear it). YET VERIZON STILL WILL NOT FIX IT! VERIZON IS THE DEVIL!

I have Bellsouth DSL, and it's not wireless. I have the Alcatel Speed Touch Home modem.
Talking with Bellsouth last night, they are sending me a new, better modem. They alos siad they could send a tech to check out the line. The new modem is free, so I said send it. It will be here tomorrow (Tuesday).
If that doesn't work though, what else should I look at? I guess have them come check the line? This is really getting frustrating. Last night it wouldn't stay connected for more than 20 or so minutes, and this morning it has slready dropped me in the first 15 minutes.
Thanks for all the replies!

Let them come out and check the line.
I have ADSL and had them run a seperate line to the computer room.
Before that, there was noise and I had a bad connection. Now the phone line comes into the house at a box in the kitchen, then they run a seperate line from that box to my computer room. Yes, it takes a few visits for them to run the line, and you may have to do it yourself, but they'll help you and eventually you'll have a seperate line going to your computer. I did the same thing when I had Comcast cable, ran a seperate line to the computer room, bypassing the tv sets in the house.

My mom has DSL and it drops out too. I'll click on a page and it will say not connected. I'm going to look at the links above and check them out, thx for posting them.

Edit: After reading the above links, I'm going to buy a D-Link DI-604 for my mom's computer. I already have that router at home and it works great.

I don't know if it's the a line problem because I've had this connection for 2+ years with no problems until this last week. That's what makes me hopeful it's just the modem. But I guess the line could have just developed a probelm, right?
Either way, I think I'll go ahead a get a router. I plan on having 2 computers connected soon anyways.
Suggestions on a cheap but reliable router. I don't need anything fancy.

I had similar problems with my cable service, and it turned out to be my modem (twice in 2-3 years actually)

I am on my 4th modem since I started with cable internet (the last one I purchased as an upgrade)

You downloading a lot? Most ISPs will throttle your connection if they feel you're making too much use of your "unlimited" internet access  Past that, do the normal updated virus & spyware scans, and it wouldn't hurt to check if there's newer firmware out for your modem and/or router.

Lines can devlop problems over the years. I've pulled fire ant nests, rats, mice, a bunch of stuff I have no idea what it is, and alot of other things out of telephone boxes. Rats sometimes even manage to eat through the wires. But it is an electrical connection. ALL electrical connections go bad after a certain amount of time especially those that were sortered in the first place. The connections can corrode, break off, or just lose contact. Theres no easy way to tell whats wrong without a line test.

Hey, when you were having problems, were you able to reconnect just fine. I can reconnect normally and everything is fine, then it just stops. The only way I know the connection is lost is when the next web page won't load (or if I'm playing on line I get disconnected from the server). My connection status screen still says connected. I then disconnect, and reconnect and everything is fine for a while.

Gurck:
No, very little D/L'ing. Mainly just surfing and alot of on-line gaming. This causes the main problem. Kind of hard to play when "disconnected from server" keeps popping up. :|

Go to Bellsouth, , register and ask your question there. Dsreports is one of the best online help forums for dsl. The people over at the SBC ameritech forums have cured my connection ills.

Good luck!

Maybe one of your line filters has gone bad?

do you have any spare filters that you could swap the old ones or diconnnect your phones for a while to see if that helps...

I do have an extra one and I wil try it tonight. I hadn't thought of that.

Curly:
Thanks! I will try that forum out.

Ok, I got my new modem and no change. Still keep getting disconnected. It's easily reset when surfing, but it's killing my online gaming.
It was suggested that maybe I need a new ethernet card. Mine is 2+ years old. Do these typically have a short life span? Is a new card a good idea, or a waste of time and money?

I'd get a line test before replacing your ethernet card. I had similar problems with my DSL, although it was very intermittant. It took me several calls and 3 line tests to fix it, but it was eventually tracked down to a cracked phone cable running just under the soil by my back door. Every time the sprinklers would come on, the cable would get wet and start causing problems, but by the time the phone guy came out to check the line it was dry and working fine again. If you're having constant problems, it should be much easier to track down exactly what cable or connection is causing your problems.

It could also be a line filter problem, as mentioned above. I'd try and unplug all but one phone, and replace the filter on that phone with the spare. If the problems go away, its just a matter of plugging the rest of the phones in one at a time till it causes problems again, then replacing the filter on the last phone you plugged in. I also had disconnection issues related to filters, but that was because I'd forgotten to put a filter on my Tivo, so whenever the Tivo attempted to dial home it messed up my DSL (and failed dialing home, so I ran out of guide data, that was the major clue).

How do I get a line test? Do I call up tech support or somewhere else? I would like to get a line test done, but they seem hesitant to do that. Not sure why though. Is it a PITA for them?

If you go to the link I sent you, those guys might be able to get you a line test. Not sure though. I had probelms with my dsl (SBC), went to the SBC forums at dslreports and the techs there had a line test done. No need to call and hope you get a human. The tech that set up my line test even called me to do some preliminary testing. Then he called back the next day to see if things were good. Best support I ever had and didn't have to call anyone. The total time to fix the probelm was 3 days.

good luck

Is your modem a modem/router? If it is you can try logging into the modem to check if it is set to 'on-demand' mode instead of always-on. The only thing though is that you seem to have been working fine all this time so it's probably not it. But it might be worth it just to double check (I just got a new Westell Versalink from verizon and bridged it because I started to have weird problems with some apps not working right, internet connectivity never dropped though).

Assuming that your Hardware is OK it might be Quirky PPPOE software.

DSL in general is better with a Router even if you have one computer.

Why? Look at this page: DSL PPPOE and Cable/DSL Routers.

If you want to stick with software there is a link to better PPPOE software (at the end of the page).

In addition on make sure that your TCP/IP stack is optimized for DSL.

Thanks for the info, marked for later.

I see some one already replied to your bellsouth thread. Good info/advice there. keep us posted on the out come.
