I keep getting mail to my address with somebody else's name on it.

I keep getting mail to my house with MY address but somebody else's name. Its happened about 3 or 4 times, and I usually open it, because I don't always check One time it was a check for $350, and I called up the company who wrote the check, and they said they couldn't find another address for the guy. I called the guy who owned the house before me, and he had no clue who it was either, much less where to find him.

The other day there was a package on my doorstep addressed to him. I opened it (not because I didn't notice this time, but because i'm a nosy bitch,) and it was a nice coffee table book from the "Free Tibet" campaign.

But yesterday I got a letter from the IRS that had been redirected already looking for like $3500 in back taxes from the guy. What am I supposed to do?

I don't want to get pounded for opening somebody else's mail, but I don't always check the name before I open it, and I have no clue who or where this guy is.

If I call the IRS and tell them that I accidently was sent some other guy's IRS notice, will they send me to Federal "Pound-Me-In-The-Ass" prison?

lol, you're not supposed to open other people's mail, even if it is sent to your house.

Just write "return to sender, does not live here" on it and stick it back in the mailbox.

was it an old occupant of the house? I just usually wirte NOT AT THIS ADDRESS On it and put it in the outgoing mail slot. I dont see it again.

I don't know. I probably will just tape the envelopes up and write "WTF IS THIS?" on the front of the envelope.

1) Change your name to the other guy's
2) Cash the checks which now obviously belong to you.
3) ....
4) Profit?
5) Change name back before IRS shows up.

Seriously, all you need to do is write "Not at this address" on the stuff and put it back in the mail. You shouldn't open it.

I'm thinking identity theft. But the individual must be really inept.

You should look into this really soon to minimize the damage to yourself.

If it's identity theft, why am I getting IRS bills? Why do you think its ID theft?

I'm not saying it is, I'm saying it's a possibility. I said inept. Used your address with a different name. Most criminals are not all that bright.

You can get a copy of your credit report for free now. You should look into it. Make sure. Sorry if I got you worked up.

I see what you're talking about. If I was worked up i'd change the thread title to: OMG MY CREDIT HAS BEEN HAX0RZRED

Just out of curiousity, what's the best place to get a free credit report? there is freecreditreport.com, but I don't want to enter in any information into some place that's gonna sell it or something.

Lay down and start using your legs to spin around in circles. While you are spinning in circles, unleash the most violent outburst of diarrhea imaginable. Then your problems will be solved.

According to mail rules, if it's pre-sorted standard (in the upper right corner of the envelope) you can just throw it away.

If it's first class or anything else, you must put it back in the mailbox. It a felony to open other people's mail IIRC.

Also, you can put a note in the mailbox with the all the people's names that live there, that might help the mailman out.

Like that's going to help the post office know what the problem is. Just tape it up, write "not at this address" on the envelope and put it back in your mailbox. If it continues, contact the post office and explain the situation to them.
