I just wonder anyone have a Tablet PC?

As computer enthusiasts I think people should get fun. They are great fun; although a bit expensive.

Frankly saying they are very useful for university students, and even high school students like me; wWho is lazy organising their 7 ft piles of notes.

I have one...don't use it very much any more. It's a P3 mobile 800 with 256 megs of ram. Barely seemed to be able to run Tablet Edition. I have no idea why acer underpowered it, plus it uses pc133 and the biggest chip it would accept is the 256 meg.

Anyway, i'm sure a centrino one works just find, but I still found myself using it as a laptop and never using the tablet functionality.

I am actually in the market for a portable PC for school. The tablet PC's have me intrigued, wonder if they are actually useful. Mainly for note taking in my case. I tsound scool, just wondering how others who have actually used them feel about it.

Also I should mention one other thing I like about them, is thier ability to use portrait or landscape modes of viewing. I think the portrait mode would be good for web surfing.

toshiba m205-s810 owner here

great machine for everything, dedicated graphics card so performance isn't hindered

i find myself using it more often than not for classes, note taking is a breeze on it.

at the end of the day you have the notes all in one spot. very easy to incoprorate into your lifestyle...if its a convertible

there's 2 option slate or convertible, slate no keyboard...etc

everyone has a use for it, you just have to find it. Web surfing is a joy on this machine though

Yeah I definately think if I go that route, I want to get a convertible. I basically want a laptop that can also be used as a tablet PC. I want the optical drive and everything. I know the convertibles are heavier then the slates. But I will only be taking 1 class per day, so I will only have to lug it from my car to class, then back out to the car. Not too much carrying, and still many if not all of the convertibles seem to be under 6 pounds. I am still debating though if its worth it over a standard laptop, since in a lot of cases the tablet is gonna cost you more.

I have been looking mostly at Dells, IBM's, Compaq/HP, and Gateway, since I get discounts at all those places. Although a lot of dells normal deals are better then the discount I get, considering I have to tack on huge warranties to get the savings. IBM gives me a 10% discount, and I know they make awesome laptops, but you get what you pay for, and in this case I mean they are expensive. Compaq/HP supposedly give me up to 7% off. But I configured the same model with the same specs, both on the regular site and then my discount site. The price was exactly the same, both saying I saved 2%.

Now gateway is actually looking interesting to me, my dicount there is 15%, but only on certain models. I was actually suprised to see the only notebook we get a discount on is actually the M275 model, which is thier tablet model. I hadn't expected that. I think I can get the X model for like 1245.00 or something close, and the XL for like 1425.00, thta is without warranties on each though.

I too was debating about getting a tablet or notebook for college (Washington & Lee University). I bit the bullet on a Dell i6000D becuase it was so cheap. I got in on that Logitech deal and got an io2 writing device, so any diagrams I need to draw I can just do them with that then put them into my Word note files. I might change my mind once I get there in the fall, though and sell my Inspiron in favor of a tablet. I should be able to cut the loss of $$ to a minimum because of the great deal I got on the system.

No cost yet.

Will be based on the new refreshed X design ala X41 ThinkPad. It will be a convertable, with the biometric reader (if optioned by buyer) on the screen side vs base of unit like their ThinkPads.

IBM rep said to expect announcement late May, and availability at the start of June.-So not too far off.

WackyDan, I actually looked into the IBM tablet. Some info I found said 1600.00 for the base model. I, and many others I have seen post elsewhere feel there is no way IBM will put out a tablet at that price.

And if the thing is over 2000.00, which many think it will be, then it better be dang good to be worth that.

Any issues or reasons not to get the Gateway M275 tablet? Like I said, I can get that one for 15% off. It seems like a solid convertible, with most complaints being about poor support from gateway, not too much bad about the unit itself.

Albis, what does your friend use his tablet for, and why exactly does he have that opinion of it?

optical drives are more of a luxury than a needed thing...i don't have an optical drive on my toshiba m205, but i don't use it enough to need 1

all my programs are on there when i got it,

the thing when looking for a tablet is dedicated graphics, and high resolution, plus ram

makes "inking" so much more enjoyable, ur writing looks lit its supposed to and not "jagged" due to the high resolution, and more ram makes it smoother

u just need to learn how to use it productively...convertible is the best way to start out, once u integrate that...and use it a lot...move to slate

trungthiendo, Yeah I definately think I will start with a Convertible model. SO that way I have the keyboard if needed.

As you said and optical drive is not always a need. I can't say I need one, but will be upset if I do need one and don't have one. But if I like a tablet well enough, I would still get it even if it lacked an optical drive.

Thanks for the extra info. I really need to study these things more, it hadn't even dawned on me how the resolution would effect the look fo the digital ink.

And I agree more ram is always good.

On a side note, whats so special about the M1400, everyone seems to like it, I assume mainly because of the screen. But the processor in that thing is anemic, how can anyone spend that much on a machine with that slow of a processor. Am I missing something, are there more options for it? As near as I can tell it comes with a 900Mhz Celeron, with an option for a 1.1 Pentium M??? Is that right? Seems slow to me, I don't know though, maybe its okay for just office apps and what not.

1.1 is plenty fas for a tablt...u don't game on it so its fine...the thing is 3lbs...light equal price...

the battery on it lasts for a good while too...

the screen is perfect 12.1 at a xga resolution...14 with xga is crappy....

its a slate, very light, and it it comes with an enhanced viewing angle for the lcd screen; view anywhere??? which marks up that price tag.

its a great machine but very costly

as for optical drive, if you really need to use the cd drive, you can always get an external...which is great for those time when u need it and great for when u don't

Thanks for the info. I have heard there may be some new tablets coming out in not too long. I don't actually begin school till late June, so I can wait a bit. Think there will be anything out then worth waiting for?

Also what makes 14.1" with XGA crappy?

screen is big for that resolution...so the font doesn't look as great...

iono try one out go to cc or bb and check them out

toshiba has 3 in their lineup i think m200, r10/r15

acer

one site to check out is tabletpcbuzz.com lots of info there

Yeah I have been checking out a lot of the tablet sites as well as here.

Is the Toshiba the only one with a half way decent video card or whatever you want to call it.

Yeah I know a tablet isn't geared for gaming, but the better the video, the more likely it will be able to handle future OS's and software. I mean sure all those neat visuals aren't needed, but some are cool, and longhorn, looks to have a few, so it would be nice to utilize them if possible. Plus who knows how many other times the extra garphics may come in handy. But I agree its not my highest priority.

There are just so many tablets available, it is hard to pick and choose between them. I am high on the Gateway M275, it seems like agreat all around tablet, with the biggest complaint being weight, and I get that 15% discount on it.

yup the gateway looks excellent that was my other choice...but i opted for the toshiba since i got it for a steal 1300 back when it was going for 1600

Well heck, how much are they going for now? I thought the cheapest I had seen them was at 1450.00 or so. If i could get one for 1300.00 I may consider it more heavily. Do they just have a 1 year standard warranty?

Also I have set my purchase timeframe at late may/early June, any tablets coming out in thta time frame, I should be on the lookout for?

Thats kinda hard to read, its a 1.8 Pentium M, 1x512MB DDR, 60GB hard drive, DVD/CDRW combo drive, 3 year 9x5 ADP warranty, extra battery and extra digitizer pen. Its a little expensive, but I think I would feel better having the 3 year warranty.

That normally would cost about 2220.00

Anything else I can get that is better, that is close to it in price?

that's not a bad price, but i've heard rumors about toshiba releaseing a new tablet for replacement of the m200..

the r10/15 is just an affordable solution, not a top of the line

hp is gonna come out with one soon....i would just do more research...

but that's not a bad price for a 3 year warranty...

Good to know, i will have to look into that stuff. But I just wonder if I can get anything better for around the same price, I think it will be hard to match that price.

i'm debating selling my tablet, looking to buy a car so need all the cash i can get so i don't have to loan...

hit me up if ur interested
