I went into a dollar store to get some padded envelopes for some products I had to ship. At the register this little girl told her mom she wanted some big candy cane but her mom said she couldn't b/c she didn't have the money. She asked the clerk if she could exchange the soda she bought for her for the cc but there was a 1 buck difference. The clerk then said why not it's Christmas and let the girl trade her soda for the cc :(

That is when you could have slipped the lady at the counter the money for the soda for the little girl. =]

Must be nice to live a sheltered life if that's one of the saddest things you've seen.

Also, sounds like a good thing?

It's sad that they had no money, and I wanted to buy it but I was afraid of insulting the mom.

If they had no money they wouldn't be in the dollar store buying soda.

Well, it worked out okay, but you COULD have offered. Who care if you offend, when you're genuinely trying to be nice.

I was in a similar situation with a parent a long ways back at an EB store. Some little girl was like 20 cents short for a toy/game, the clerk said no, the parent contemplated paying for her, but concluded that it would be a bad lesson to learn (i.e. someone will always be there to help you). I like to think we prevented the future victimization of a sugar daddy that day...

If the girl and her mom have enough to eat, have shelter, and are safe, then it's not that sad. Everyone can't get everything they want. That's not sad, that's life.

sad is when a mother can't afford to feed her child actual food.

not getting a candy cane or soda...not so much.

How does it feel to be a presumptuous asshole? It's possible to enjoy all the treats in life without being obese or even moderately overweight.

Wait, do you know if the mother couldn't afford getting both, or just didn't have the money at the moment?

Yup me too. If someone comes in to work, or if I'm in line and I see someone struggling, I'll toss a buck or whatever to help them out, or I'll carry their groceries out if they need help.

If I was in the OP's situation, I'd have told the girl to keep the soda, and then paid the clerk for it.

Or just didn't want the kid to have the candy and claimed not having money to avoid having to say no.
