I just upgraded to the 4890 from a 7900GT.

For the first time in years I'm finally happy with a video card upgrade for once. I've always ran on or close to the higher end of resolutions with my monitors. When everyone was using 1024x768 LCDs I was using 1600x1200. When people were using 1280x1024 I was doing 1920x1200. None of my past video cards could ever run at my monitors' native resolution in games with even a decent amount of eye candy turned on.

Now that I've finally upgraded to a 4890, WOW. All of a sudden I can play all of my games at 1920x1200, and on high settings to boot. Finally, a video card in the highest bang for the buck category that I can actually run at native resolution.

Any of you guys feel like you've gotten significantly more bang with the 4890 than with past upgrades in the same price/performance ratio category?

I think the best single GPU upgrade that I ever made was to a 8800GT but I paid $50 more than I did for the 4890 I just bought. I moved the 8800GT to a second PC and am trying to push the 4890 to the limit but still haven't hit a wall!

I upgraded from a 7900GT to a 4850 in December, it was awesome until 5 days a go when I upgraded from a 1280x1024 to 1920x1080, I haven't fired up the demanding games because I fear performance will suck 🙁

Yeah, I am a bit scared when the next generation of games come out and the card will no longer be able to handle them. I can already see this happening with games with crazy draw distances, like Fallout 3 and probably ArmA. But I think that I'll be happy with Crysis level graphics for a long time, especially at native resolution. That's probably my biggest thing right now - being able to actually run at native. Now everything is so crisp when before I couldn't even run native with all settings turned to low...

Your doubt might upset your 4850. Some have gentle hearts. Is it 512mb or 1gb? The 1gb's are stocky blighters and able to handle a large load, typical of those given to them by HD Captains. A soldier always wants to perform - give your man a chance >_0

Yup. For $150 after rebates, one of the best upgrades I've ever done. I think the next huge upgrade is going to be when I get an SSD, but unlike the 4890, I don't think it's going to be cheap 🙁

Well, not that $150 was cheap, but for the huge noticeable performance boost, quite reasonable.

It's 512 MB, didn't feel the need to spend that extra cash for 1280x1024.

Hm. At native 1920x1080 with no AA and juggling between medium and high on Crysis, I think you could pull out 30fps+.

Oops, sorry, going off topic now. I think my family compy had a Radeon 9700 or 9800, maybe pro, and now I have an x1950 Pro. It's the only leap I've had, but I'm considering a 4890 so that'll be a huge leap I'm sure, even generation wise!

Remember that the display resolution and the texture resolution are not related at all. Even Quake 1 from over 10 years ago can run at 1080p, but the textures are lower res and it still looks beautiful. Instead of turning output resolution down, just lower the texture resolution and it'll run great. In something like Crysis or Fallout 3, it will be labeled "texture quality".

I came from a 6800 NU, talk about a big jump. I love this card, only two concerns:

Mine is an HIS 4890, did anyone get a supplied cable that outputs Component video?

Also, I ran 3D Mark 03 just for kicks and during every loading screen, the card lets out this high pitched squeal, the squeal immediately goes away once the rendering starts. Can anyone else run check to see if their cards make any such noises? It seems to only happen in menus...which I don't really understand.

Otherwise, this is a great card for the money. I'm in <3.

Is it a mechanical squeal like a moving part is screwing up (fan) or like a system beep squeal? I've never heard any such noises from my 4890, which is also an HIS I believe. No component cable either for me.

I just came into a little money, I think I might make the jump from a 4870 512MB to a 4890... 1920x1200 with a little AA seems to really stress the 512MB card. I was sure I was going to wait for the next gen cards, but 4890's are just so cheap and offer such bang for the buck.

Grats on the upgrade 🙂 My jump was from X1950XTX to HD4870. I was also very pleased with it.

System beep type squeal. The fan is running without obstruction.

It's the coils squeeking I'd say. My HD4870 did that too when loading levels in Crysis, but the moment it loaded and fired up the noise went away. It's common for the high-end cards. Not all of them do it (hit/miss vendor-independant).

ATI Mach 32 2MB DRAM. Added the Voodoo2 add-on card. Now that was a freakin' upgrade. Not just FPS, but it changed the way everything looked.

I upgraded from a IGP G965 to HD4850,it was like going from a crawl on all fours to being strapped to a ramjet.Everything(almost) maxed out in games, runs buttery smooth at the measly rez of 1280x1024.

Thats why we can run 4 of them ^.^

...my best upgrade was from a 9800 pro to 6800GT SLI 4 years ago 😀

mine was a geforce 2 MX 32MB to a geforce 6600GT 128MB. goddamn was that an amazing upgrade for me! i went from complete unplayableness to complete awesomness.

in fact, i also went from 512MB to 2x1GB at the time too - seriously made my computer WAY faster.

Yeah man, It's a tough call for me. I went from an FX5200 128mb to a 6600gt 128mb and the difference was just mind blowing.

From there I went from the 6600gt to a 4850 and while the performance and eye candy were definitely a plus, I don't think I'll ever be able to top the difference that the 6600gt upgrade made. Tough call!
