I just tried Windows Vista for first time.

Why? Why do we need a completely new platform? How could this get better than XP? I don't think it can. At least from a usability perspective. I've heard of better security and internet explorer finally not built in, but most of it seems like a killer new face lift. Everything from folders to the control panel and it's options look different. And only some new usability perspectives really shine, but still have me wondering wether it's enough to spend $100 on.

I used Home Basic, since I didn't think Aero was a sufficient reason to install anything higher. Some of the things I like were the new My Documents, which is now the Account Folder and contains many folders inside like Contacts, Desktop, Downloads, Documents and other useful folders, that of course you could have created yourself, but the layout is there for you.

I also kinda liked one of the gagdets so far, but that side panel thing is annoying and a bit redundant. Firstly, it's there, taking up desktop space, and it doesn't serve much use for me, and there are probably programs out there that do similar things. I personally wouldn't use the sidebar.

There was a lot of clutter everywhere, nothing was streamlined. The options in the control panel had sub options right on the control panel folder and it was confusing and difficult to look at. And a lot of options were renamed for no reason such as Accessability Options turned into Making Your Computer Easier To Work With, or some such crap. Well, after clicking on it, I found it didn't apply to me. They also renamed System Restore to System Protection. Why?

The start menu had this one nice tweak in that instead of All Programs branching out to the right as it does in XP, it is contained in the start menu, which I thought was cool. But I wonder what will happend when it gets flooded with programs.

There are new icons everywhere for folders. And they match the windows usually and the background and it's difficult to distinguish them as a folder. I'm used to XP and they have yellow, beige looking folders, now everything is a light, but refreshing blue, and it's just really hard to get used to.

In conclusion, I didn't get a very good impression of Vista. I find myself saying, "What's all the fuss about?" It looks like Windows XP with a major face lift that looks so radically different that it seems new, until you realize that it isn't. Some of the things I do like, I ask, "Why couldn't they have just added these small tweaks to XP?" It seems to me like Windows Vista, is a polished version of XP, however, it throws a lot of crap and clutter everywhere, that destroys the ease of use of XP in an effort to make it look new and different. At least I got some nice wallpaper out of it.

There is a LOT under the hood that isn't visible... You can still shift it to classic mode and get the perks.

Reading the recent comments on AT on Windows Vista has made me pause for thought.

I contemplated that I would be welcoming Vista in the next few months, but I've decided to stick with XP Pro 32bit after perusing thru the many commentaries I've seen on AT and elsewhere.

So far Vista seems like a waste. Too many bells and whistles with usability, performance and stability being a distant afterthought.

It doesn't surprise me, I knew this was going to happen after windows XP.

Jeezzzusss christ.

Do you realize that people said the same thing from upgrading from 95 to 98, and the SAME thing
upgrading from Windows 98 to XP ? How far better a gaming-OS 98 would be compared to XP since XP uses so many resources, etc..etc..

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. Sure, there's ton of new features, but most of them are useless to me. I'm not looking forward to losing DirectSound acceleration or decreased performance. Since I won't be using any DRM stuff I don't want all that overhead either. I think XP just needed a patch ("XP Second Edition") with a new DirectX.

MS is always focusing on making it easier for new users, with complete disregard to the people who have gotten used to XP and don't want to learn the OS over again. It's like they changed stuff just to say they changed it. It's another forced upgrade (I doubt I'll be able to play Direct3D 10 games under XP). The problem is, new technologies don't get implemented on the old OSes and we're all sucked into upgrading anyway. It's not because we want to. Add more UI customization options, breadcrumb navigation, and DirectX 10 to XP and I'd be happy. Maybe add that unified gaming architecture they were talking about too, as well as the new network stack. I don't want all the other needlessly redesigned stuff though.

I don't even know why they're taking video operations out of the kernel layer now. It's not like ATI or NVIDIA's drivers are that unstable, are they?

If they hadn't have added all the bloat I might have considered it. I'm sure it will gain market share because of OEM PCs though.

He put it nicely: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=34&threadid=1939887&enterthread=y

Too bad everyone's flaming him. ;)

yes nvidias/atis drivers are unstable!

most crashes i've had during the last year have been due to nvidias drivers (the windows recovered from a ..... yadda confirms that)

ATI's drivers are the first to get WHQL cert under vista :) Can so not be right.

ALso..no problems with Nvidia's NF4 drivers in Vista.

I hate the new Vista start menu. Changing it to classic is also a pain because it moves the shortcuts to My Documents etc down one submenu.

I really don't see how they thought the new start menu would be easier than the XP one.

Ya. Do you mean to say that they were wrong? _at_that_time_.
(you try gaming on a 800mhz machine with 256 megs of ram and Windows XP and see how far you get compared to Win98)
The way it goes with these things is that you never upgrade a OS right away. No point. If you want a trouble-free Vista experiance wait till after the first service pack comes out. It's the same thing with Apple and even Linux. Never upgrade a Apple OS until after 10.x.2 comes out and don't upgrade to a newer version of Linux until after a month or two.

Gives it time for the OS makers to shake out the bugs. Despite all the testing and the betas and everything else the real testing doesn't begin until the software gets out and into the hands of the general public.

Really? I think MC is a cheap Front Row clone. (IMHO)

I wasn't too impressed with it.

Have to say I agree with VIAN about Vista. I don't like the changes - but we might as well start learning because it's coming, along with all its gloat and bloat.

No, thats basically what vista is, comes with a few new features, creates more problems then it solves and is a PITA to use. It's merely an incrimental upgrade, an excuse to buy new hardware, vista's features have been stripped to the bone, if there was a feature they should have removed long ago it's their stupid 3D rendered desktop. I'll upgrade to vista when they make it possible for me to run the OS on a system with 128MB ram.

We are members of a free market economy, high technology is a huge component of that economy, without generation of new products that create incentive (artificial or ortherwise) to buy, the system breaks down.

Like it or lump it.

Windows Vista will gain popularity in short time. Not because it's any better, but simply because it's what Dell (HP, Compaq, Lenovo, Sony) will ship with all new PC's. Combine that with MS not letting them sell XP anymore, and Vista will gain a foothold and we'll all be using it in a year or two.

We would stick with XP if we could, but MS won't let that happen.
