Really old computer (relatively speaking, just turned 5) and before I couldn't turn it on without beeping, it would crash at a ridiculous rate. Is my mobo screwed? It should at least beep when there's no memory to be found, right?

For having 5000+posts, you really should know better than to post such a vague question..

As most tech guys just give a glance over to decide if they want to help, you really need to give a complete question. We need to know the history of the problem, your specs, and exactly what you want to accomplish.

To answer your vague question, it should beep in the absence of mem or a vga, but not knowing your specs it is hard to be certain. Furthermore, I hold much more confidence in the chaos theory than the thought that things should always work a certain way. Given that humans created computers, they are susceptible to human error, especially given the vast amounts of programming needed and the many different companies that produce computer parts.

If the problem is the crashing, then it would be best to diagnose the causes from there (if your own deductive reasoning has led you to testing the mobo by removing the mem/vga, then it would help if you outlined this).

Lastly, seeing your sig gives me one further suggestion. Perhaps you should replace Stevenson's quote with the following:

"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundral." Samuel Johnson, 1775. Certainly holds more credence in modern times....
