Yep, just cooked a baked potato using the Alton Brown method (season 1 episode 2). It was freaking awesome.

Any questions?

Did you try my method? Its better than Alton's. It involves a microwave.

This?

Step #1 Heat oven to 350 degrees & position racks in top & bottom thirds.
Step #2 Wash potato (or potatoes) thoroughly with a stiff brush & cold running water.
Step #3 Dry, then using a standard fork poke 8 to 12 deep holes all over the spud so that moisture can escape during cooking.
Step #4 Place in a bowl & coat lightly with oil.
Step #5 Sprinkle top with kosher salt & place potato directly on rack in middle of oven.
Step #6 Place a baking sheet on the lower rack to catch any drippings.
Step #7 Bake 1 hr or until skin feels crisp but flesh beneath feels soft.
Step #8 Serve by creating a dotted line from end to end with your fork, then crack the spud open by squeezing the ends towards one another.
Step #9 It will pop right open.
Step #10 But watch out, there will be some steam.

Yup that's exactly how I did it, to the word (except I used metric temperature because my oven is less than five thousand years old).
Edit - oh and I used table salt because kosher salt is stupid expensive around here.

I'm guessing it's some stupid meme from one of the larger forums.

Everyone wants to be awesome.
