I got a 720 on the Math, 700 on the Verbal, and a 4 on the Essay. I feel so stupid. This was for fun and I didn't study but I was expecting to ace all three parts. I think I'll take the Math subject test next. It looks more fun.

Sorry, I meant to say I took the exam a couple of weeks ago and found out what my Essay score was today.

What's your field?

700 verbal's pretty good, IIRC in the 90%ile usually. The essay no one cares about, and the math's not bad. They tend to throw in some ridiculously tricky questions...

I think I got 780 math and 680 verbal (Physics / Math major at undergrad).

I wish I had a 700 verbal score. I'm not sure why but the reading comprehension portion made me want to fall asleep. As for the math score, shame on you! :p

It was Econ and Math. Like I said, I didn't study and it was a spur of the moment thing. I just wanted to see how far I could get without studying but these numbers are abysmal.

yeah this is the score that I got as well :Q

A 720 on math isn't quite up there for an engineering school, but a 700 in verbal is excellent. I've taken the test three times trying to raise my verbal score and the 680 is the highest I could get it while my math fluctuated in the mid 700s.

Engineering undergrad, going to NYU in a month for grad.

What are you going for?

I got 740 and 700 (i should've done way better in math, but i was working full time), good enough to get into applied economics program at michigan :)

I just finished my Ph. D program in Economics. This wasn't a serious test. Just something I'd take without testing. All those geometry questions were lost on me considering I haven't done geometry since high school. When I took the GRE for graduate school I got a 750 Verbal, 780 Math, and 5 Essay. Back then, I studied but me getting a lower score hit my pride. This was a personal dissapointment I thought I'd share.

Where did you go to graduate school?

I've been considering both Economics and Computer Science in grad school. (I have two years left of undergrad though, dual B.S. degrees FTW)

the scores use to be higher before the GRE was computerized. Maybe that made the difference?

Wow you rocked the verbal part. I think I got mid-600s and I'm pretty good with the vocab. The math was easy though... I got 800 no sweaters. 4 on the essay here, too.

WTF I want a 700 in verbal. I got a 600 on my diagnostic, 650 on my first practice, and a 630 the night before. I took the real exam and I got a freaking 550. Math was an expected 800, but now my real score (1350) sits lower than my 1400 practice and my peak of 1450. I'm disappointed in myself. Must retake!

This summer shall be restudying of the GRE for a better score.

When should you start studying for GREs? Any recommended material? Is verbal still memorizing vocab?

I'd be interested in hearing what people who've taken it have to say as well.

Depends on what you're shooting for. If you're math/science/engineering, do some practice tests on math and ignore the verbal/writing for the most part. Could easily start a few weeks before and be fine (unless you suck at math, in which case you're in the wrong field already...).

If you're shooting to nail the verbal, then I'd start much earlier and memorize as much vocabulary as possible. That is basically all the verbal is.

FYI, having taken a few practice tests I got on a Kaplan CD, I scored 800M, 680V, 5.5W.

 Coming from the guy that doesn't understand the influencing factors that affect the price of oil/gas, posts an article that describes the price of gas dropping 34 cents in FL but states that prices have risen 30 cents. Comedy Gold!!!!!
