Usually, I give street beggars/ hustlers some coins if they ask for spare change. This dude came up and asked if I had spare change so he could get drunk. I thought he was joking, and said no. He acted all offended, as if he was entitled to my money and I was breaking some law by not giving him any. This slightly enraged me, seeing as I have to be at my not terribly enjoyable job all damn week... if he wants more money, why the fvck doesn't HE get a job? That is what I said. He said "how can I get a job if I'm living on the street". I looked away. This is Australia, everyone can obtain unemployment benefits, and sit on them for decades. I am a bleeding heart liberal, I support socialist welfare programs, blah, blah, but this guy was too much.

edit: ok, now I feel slightly disgusted with myself.

i almost got fired from my old job for having two bums run wind-sprints accross the street and back (fastest bum won 5 bucks)

I don't remember seeing a lot of beggars in Australia.

Then again most of our time was spent in Canberra ACT.

in the states, you can get 2 bums to fight each other and pay the winner. you get to film them too.

I myself is pretty cold hearted. I have no symphathy for beggers who ask for money, and then blow it by buying drugs.

There's always this one guy who hangs out by the Pay Phones at the 7 Eleven down the street from my house. I used to stop by on my way home from work or to work to get something to eat or drink and he always ask for money and when I tell him no he starts muddering stuff under his breath.

I stopped going there because of him. Last time he asked if I could give him a ride somewhere. There's a big sign on the building that says No Loitering but the store owners don't seem to care.

I'm glad I can go back to using the entrance ramp by my house. For the last two months I've had to drive 4 miles to another entrance in a not so good part of town. I'll stop and get a coffee and a paper at the gas station there.
I've been getting hit up for change daily.

I am happy to give so-called "bums" spare change, and it is for them to decide what to do with it. If I was homeless or living on the streets I'd probably be using drugs or alcohol myself. It can't be a pleasant life or an easy life to get out of.

the problem is most of them aren't doing anything to get out of it...

Clean your act up and don't be a slob

Probably because of all the socialist welfare programs you support ;)

The shirt to wear when going to a place known to have lots of panhandlers:

http://www.tshirthell.com/store/product.php?productid=322

NEVER give panhandlers money.

Donate generously to shelters and outreaches that give ORGANIZED and SUPERVISED assistance to people, but NEVER give money directly to panhandlers.

At best, you're prolonging their poverty and encouraging the harassment of others. At worst, you're supporting an addiction.
