I just swapped my GTX 280 SLI setup for a GTX 480

.... And I'm damned glad I did.

Everything is much smoother, and looks better; I can finally play Crysis with everything on ultra with all the goodies on my 1920X1200 monitor, without the slightest hiccup or Microstutter, like I often had with my 280s. Eventually I'll add another 480 when I need it.

Benching with Vantage brought my 3dmark & GPU scores down a little bit, which was to be expected, but raised my CPU score 12,000 points....

Anyone know why the CPU went up with this change?

Ah, the wonders of a single GPU setup :), glad you like it. The CPU score probably went up due to the physics processing boost you got from the GTX 480.

There is nothing special about single GPU over multi GPU if you use vsync. God I'm tired of repeating this.

The improvement you are experiencing comes from having 1.5GB of usable vram. Don't forget to turn on transparency SSAA, the GTX480 hardly takes a hit from it and it improves image quality plenty where you can afford it obviously, I'd say set it to 4x in the global settings, and drop it down to 2x or multi-sampling in game profiles like Crysis, Metro, or anything else where you need more frames before image quality.

Vsync is GOD when using multi gpu that is for sure. Input lag, meh.... the lesser of the 2 evils

All AFR schemes have input lag because they render ahead to keep the GPUs feed.

News to me, I thought the input lag was associated with Vysnc and not AFR. But does Vysnc get rid of Micro Stutter that some users are sensitive to when using SLI?, this would make a big difference to me in whether or not I pick up a 2nd 460. I almost always use Vysnc.

Is there a setting to lower how far Dual Gpu's render ahead? Can something like the "Maximum PreRender Frames" setting in nVidia CP help with the lag input lag associated with AFR?

In the past i've set that option to 2 when using Vysnc, but for now i've left it at 3.

They are two different causes of input lag.

Yes, it should help by evening out the framerate spread. The problem is that vsync + triple buffering is a bit hit and miss with AFR in terms of compatibility.

That setting could possibly control it, but if you stop rendering ahead in an AFR system you’ll get no performance gain over a single card. It’s that simple.

I want to play Crysis at ultra high settings at 1920x1200 once to see what it is like. Probably have to wait another 5 years before I can buy what I can afford that will play it at those settings.

Damnit, Hydra was so close to striking gold. I didn't even care about mix and matching cards or it not scaling as well as AFR. SFR at 80% scaling was impressive to me, too bad they had other problems.
