I just survived a nasty bout with a spyware/virus attack

I did a dumb thing today.

A web page wouldn't render properly in FF so I opened it up in IE. Be aware that I have a fully patched OS and IE. The page rendered correctly in IE, but when I closed it, Kaboom!!!!

The window closed but another popped up and then installed spywares and viruses all on its own. WTF? I didn't click yes to anything, as I didn't get any dialog box.

So I had to fight back. My trusty Symantec AV caught the viruses. Ad-watch caught most of the BHOs and reg hack attempts.

Spybot removed a huge portion of spyware. TrendMicro Anti-Spyware caught most of the remainder (I was just testing it). Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta caught the straglers.

Just to be sure I ran CWSshredder and removed one object.

I made sure msconfig didn't have any mystery start up software. And I cleaned out my registry.

Everything is back to normal now.

Phew, it had me scared for a few minutes.

And people on AT have told me its impossible to have this stuff install on its own, with no help from the user. Yeah, right.

 
Rule #1, image the drive, then it only takes minutes to restore, no hard labor
Rule#2, take any advice here with a huge grain of salt, I mean c'mon, have you read some of this s***!?!?!
Rule#3, if rule #1 followed, open beer, wait for reimage, relax.
 
somehow I don't take any precautions except having a kickass network, and I NEVER EVER get ANYTHING...


except spam..but that is not myfault🙁

IE is one big giant security hole into your PC. Use at your own peril. Second, you've been a bad boy, surfing pr0n and/or warez sites......
 
This sucks because I like IE because it loads alot faster then FF and I can resize the favorites panel on the left to a narrower size then I can in FF. 🙁

IE takes SOOO long to load on my machine now sine I never ever use it. try it out. I forget the technical reason for it, but FF is now lightnight quick.

😕 are you using 1.5?? You must have a pos machine if IE is slow to load. I'm talking once the browsers have been used and then shut down as happens when one doesn't reboot for a few days. For me when I open IE it's like bam, ninja action fast. When I open FF it's slower by quite a bit which is annoying, granted I have pos machine.
