To be fair I did purchase some high quantities... like 8 cans of tuna, and 16 cans of chunky soup (4 for 5 bucks) plus lots of fruits and veggies and lunchmeat. I usually pack my lunch so I'll eat it all but still - $180!!!!!

I've done that, and I live alone too, but what sucks is that I live in a third floor apartment in a building with no elevators. So I try to pick up whatever I need when I need it to make it easy on myself.

When you figure that 5-8 bucks for a take out lunch somewhere it adds up quick. 180 is nothing in the long run.

didn't cut out any coupons from the sunday newspaper?

shopped for anything 'buy one, get one' specials?

any items eligible for double-coupon/triple-coupon savings?

do you have a grocery 'rewards' card or one of those frequent-customer savings memberships?

Are there any grocery stores in your area that cater to Asian or Hispanic shoppers? Stores that do often have considerably lower prices on vegetables and meat than the national chain stores.

I dont really clip coupons.

Yes.

I don't deal with that.

Of course, it'd be silly not to.

How long will that last you?

I do about $200/month in groceries, so 180 doesn't really bother me, but if that's like a weekly number, yeah, you might want to cut back a bit...

I buy alot of canned foods, frozen goods, meats, frozen vegetables.. usually stuff that will keep for a while. Except for my fruits and veggies and lunchmeat which i pick up at a local produce/deli spot. This food will last me about 3 weeks to a month, being supplemented by maybe 10-15 bucks a week for fresh lunchmeat/produce.

hell no thatll last him two weeks easy, thats less then $13 a day. try to eat out on $13 a day.. hell try to eat out on $26 a day, thats one week.... its always cheaper to make it yourself... $180 is a lot of money but not for food... i try to keep it at $100 but it always goes over to $120 or so... $180 isnt fun but at least you have a lot of food to eat!

Three weeks...so about $60-75 a week? No biggie. I spent about $75 a week when I was in Prescott, AZ a few months ago, but the standard of living is higher there.

I don't see this as an abnormally high grocery bill.

i'm at a loss....
the only time I hit that high number shopping at the grocery store by myself is when I end up getting a couple of packs of beer, custom-cut beef, and any last minute requests from the wife (e.g. shampoo & cosmetics aisle).

Wow, what store? I don't remember going over $70... not sure how you got that high with the items you mention. Tuna and soup is cheap dude.

If I bought that much perishable stuff a lot of it would go bad.

I usually spend about $150 when I go. But it's no big deal, because outside of perishables, it'll last for a couple of months or more. Perishables like milk, fruit and bread really don't run up that much more... maybe a $20 trip every two weeks.

$150 for 2-3 meals a day for 60 days is about $1/meal,

Just ONE meal at $5/day dining out is twice as much in the same period of time.

Putting it in to perspective makes you think how much better off you are.

8 frozen dinners (stouffers and swanson)

You might as well eat a double cheeseburger from MacD's. They cost less and won't kill your insides as much as those frozen death trays.
