You did the right thing and probably saved your nails.

now keep that clean and scrub it frequently to prevent any infection. I wouldn't be putting on socks/shoes if you can help it. Wear sandals to work with the toe wrapped/sterilized.

I hobbled around in my suit everyday for about two weeks with sandals on. Gotta prevent infection.

Yeh, that's what I'm trying to figure out. I actually work for the corporate office of a hospital system so if anyone is sympathetic to healing it would be these guys.

I'm quite perplexed by your toe hair. Thick and luxurious for 3 toes, but then NOTHING on 4 & 5.

And way to go. Self doctoring is the tits.

Adam Carolla told a story one time of having a huge boil near his a$$hole. He curled up in front a full length mirror with his legs in the air, shining a flashlight into the mirror onto his area. He popped it with a redhot stick pin. Instant relief, according to him.

Yeah, same here. I must say, the ATOT forums can be a very strange place.

I've played a lot of sports and been to my pediatrist a ton. He just ROCKS.

Anyway, my only advice is if anything happens don't let a GP work on your feet. The link you posted provides a ton of information on the intricate tissues involved in your toes. If it doesn't look good or you show ANY signs of infection (I'm sure you know what they are) go see the ped. It might not be a bad idea to get on a low dose anti-biotic anyway.

The amount of blood that moves through your feet/toes in unbelievable and any open wound down there is severely prone to infection if kept enclosed. That hole you have is a direct tap into the blood stream, treat it as such.

<---NOT a doctor, take my advice for what it is. A guy who has had a lot of work on his toes.

I ain't got nothing on a coworkers husband. He's a carpenter and when he smashes a toe or a fingernail he just takes a drill and puts it right to his finger/toe nail and punches a hole that way.

Now that's a manly man. :Q

Yeh. But some people just get really weirded out by feet and/or things getting burrowed into their nails.

If you want a *truely* sick link...check this one out discussing the various toe problems.

Not for the faint of heart

holy fvck!!! That's gotta hurt.

it was numbed. It didn't hurt. If anything it felt a whole lot better. no more throbbing toe.

I would just go to a doctor...but that's me.

Be sure and let me know when you post the "I just had my foot removed because of severe infection" thread.

I did the same thing to my thumb when I was a kid. Jammed a compass needle in my thumb. Didnt care about anything at that time. All I needed to do was to get that pus and yellowish red blood out.
Damn it felt nice afterwards.

How To Handle Subungual Hematomas

If sufficient blunt or sharp force is applied to the nail plate and surrounding folds, it can violate the structural integrity of the nail bed and the resultant hemorrhage can fill the potential space that normally exists between the nail plate and the underlying nail bed. The force of the injury as well as the hemorrhagic response can separate the nail plate from the bed, causing traumatic onycholysis.

There are many ways to drain a painful subungual hematoma safely. The method one uses is based on the structural integrity of the nail folds and the amount of the visible nail plate associated with the hematoma. As a rule, when there are stable nail folds and an injury displaying < 25 percent of the visible nail plate associated with the hematoma, one can drain the hematoma through the nail plate using a hand cautery unit, an 18 gauge needle, a small rotary bur or a #11 bayonet blade. The clinician may use any of these instruments to pierce or perforate the plate, and allow evacuation of the underlying, unclotted blood.

Ummm... what handbook are you getting this from?

The doctor would have done the same exact thing. But instead of it costing me $.01 for a paper clip and another $3.50 for a tube of neosporin and a box of band aids it would have been $250 + 4 hours of PTO.

I work with a bunch of nurses and nurse practicioners that have seen these done hundreds of times in the doctors offices they used to work at. I showed them my feet earier and they were the ones that told me what needs to be done.

LOL, no. You're GP would have just ripped the nail off and called it a day.

Don't ever let a GP work on your feet. A PED only.

wait... jamming a toe = infection that needs to be drained?
since when?

or maybe not infection for the OP, but I made that correlation from replies.
BUT... still a jam results in excess blood buildup? not the typical 'jam' then? my jammed joints tend to have felt like bruised tendons

or.. is this the case of having a toe stepped on and as a result pooled, un-clotted blood under the nail?
