It looked really nice, but it reminded me of that Mazda SUV. Are they basically the same?

yes. all based on fusion/mazda6 (along with the CX7 and CX9)

it's probably the most important car for ford since the original taurus

I heard they're bringing back the Taurus on the news. However I don't think it's going to be a re-design. I think they're just slapping the name on the Five Hundred. I guess they haven't realized that nobody is buying the car because it's butt ugly.

no one is buying it because it has the old duratec 3 liter instead of the cyclone 3.5. once it gets the cyclone it'll do better. and the car isn't butt ugly, it's just boring.

considering how popular the highlander, pilot, murano, and RX have been, not really. but don't let reality get in the way of your politics.

ummm... no.

Mazda SUV

To me it looks like the Ford is smaller length wise and bigger height wise... just going by the two pictures posted. But generally the same I guess?!

Your comparing an Edge with a Mazdaspeed 3?

I think you'd be better of comparing it to a Cx-7. And I still think they look really different.

I'm not huge on the looks (I hate all the Chrome), but I do think this will be a plus for Ford's bottom line. It has just enough of a "different" look while still being conservative and practical (it is not a gas guzzler like a full size SUV)...that I think they'll sell a lot of these.

local radio show host has the edge but i think the dealership gave it to him to drive so he can advertise it on the radio. he says he loves it, but i don't know how much is actually love and how much is actually $$. He did the same with another vehicle last year too.

That's because people seem to forget there's more to Toyota and Honda than there compacts. The funny thing is, the only cars that those two companies really beat domestics in in mileage would be the compacts. The rest are unsurprisingly average. The big difference would be the trucks (as in pickups). Toyota is only finally getting a reasonable full-size and Honda still doesn't have one.

Looks alright, but it starts at $25,995. Thats a bit too pricey for a Ford SUV. Might as well get an Explorer which starts at the same price.

The truck like SUV's are going out of favor with the soccer moms...they want a minivan ride/interior that looks somewhat like a SUV...so they are all over the "Cross-over" market right now.

Cross-overs will be the next minivan/station wagon where the general public will eventually think they are "uncool" and "soccer momish". Actually, people already are starting to think this. Still, soccer moms are buying them...so the industry is selling them...and selling a lot of them.
