I just received my 3" memory foam topper from Overstock.com

Unfortunately, it did not come with instructions. There is a very strong and unpleasant foam-y smell emitting from the topper, will this go away and is there anything I can do to expediate the process?

Is there a way to wash the topper, or is it to be used "as is" for the entire duration of its longevity?

I am really looking forward to trying it out tonight. :)

I had a memory foam pillow from Sam's Club, it stank horribly for the first few days. I don't know about speeding up the process, but it will go away.

looking on Google, I see:

here are some tips to help the smell go away quicker. Air out the room and wash the sheets after the first couple of nights sleeping on the mattress. Sometimes a dish of vinegar on the night stand can help nullify the odors. An ozonator machine will rectify the situation very quickly.

It's not the "sleep" that discolors it.

Nocturnal emissions FTW! :D

Airing out the room - check. I just washed the sheets, but will wash them again in a few days if necessary. I wonder what kind of vinegar would help (red, white, wine, etc.). Thank you for the tip.

Are you going to put something between you and the topper? You should if you don't want the topper getting dirty (I don't know if there's any way to clean it). Anyway, if you do, you can throw in a few fabric softeners for the smell. I love the smell of fabric softeners.

Take all types that you have at your disposal. Smell each of them, and the one that has the most petent smell would be the one that you should pick.

Or, make your way to sharper image and buy one of those ionic things. That could be a bit more expensive ;)

Probably plastic solvents. Just put it in the hot sun for a while to evaporate it away. Or you could put it in a laudramat dryer for a little while (be careful if you do that.)
