I drive an old '81 caddilac i got from inside my family for free, but i just realized something. The car has become almost an heirloom, it's gone through 4 generations and still has not serious problems besides being kinda ugly.

My great grandmother bought the car new and drove it for a few years before she died.
My grandfather then owned it, driving it a bit then garaging it when he got a newer crown vic.
My parents got it a little before i turned 16 because we needed a loaner car until one of ours was out of the shop, grandpa told them to hold onto it until i needed a car
Now I have the car.

Inside 20 years it's hit 4 generations. I don't know if it can last the 25 or 30 years till i have kids to keep on going with this thing. Better start working, the thing is built like a tank so it's possible if i do some work...

That's cool how so many generations have owned it.
My car is 33 yrs old, and been through 2 gens that I know of.
My dad bought it used back in 69. I fixed it up in 96, and it's been mine.
It's a tank too! :)

Although, it does make me feel old when I consider that it's only 12 yrs older than me, but then maybe 33 just seems old for a car...

Geez when you said it passed through 4 generations of your family I thought it plowed into a family reunion or something.

nope, the engine got swapped once, the infamous 4-6-8 engine met with an early demise like so many of them. It's got a 4.1 liter buick in there now.

mileage is almost 70k, but about 25k on the engine. Like somebody mentioned, the infamous 8-6-4 engine they used to put in the caddilacs was a bad idea, it crapped out and got replaced with a Buick 4.1 liter V6. Mechanically it will last another 20 years with good maintenence, they built those old luxury cars to last forever.

I was asking about the engine 'cause my dad had a '81 Fleetwood(I think it was a Fleetwood) that had the 4-6-8 engine in it and it gave him absolutely no problems whatsoever---and he put close to 150,000 miles on it before it got totalled(he fell asleep at the wheel and hit a telephone pole).

4-6-8 engines tended to have a higher amount of problems, they were much more compicated because the fact that it would actually turn off cylinders. My mechanic was fearful about that when i told him what car i was given but he was much realived when he notice the buick engine under the hood
