I just read "The Hobbit"...

...In anticipation to the movie being released this December, but I'm not reading the damn hunger games just for the movie to be fully enjoyable!
I don't mind reading the source material of a movie, if it doesn't require me to.

The Hobbit was a decent read for me, but a bit of a disappointment after first reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I struggle to recall any of the details aside from Smaug. Perhaps a rereading is in order when I have time.

The Hobbit was written well before LOTR, as a children's story as I recall. Very different books. Lord of the Rings was attempting to create a mythology for the British.

this is correct, and i think i still like the hobbit more

im not sure about the movie, i really dont want to see the dwarves be one bad attempt after another at comic relief.

elves, goblins in the mountains, giant eagles, giant spiders, more elves, a dragon, the battle of five armies...should be interesting

and almost all of the song/poetry

I am reading The Hobbit right now. So far its a good read but as soon as I finish I am going to go for the lord of the rings.

i read the hobbit before i read LotR trilogy and you can tell they are kind of different styles. i loved them all tho, and read them over and over until my paperback copies literally fell apart. now i have a really nice leather bound edition. after reading this thread i feel i might need to read them again.



im intrigued by the hunger games books....i may get them to read.

It starts pretty slowly, but it does get much better.

Yes. Read the Hobbit in 6th grade, not too bad. Read the Fellowship of the Ring in 8th grade, again not too bad. Tried reading the Two Towers, got extremely bored. The Return of the King, I only read the part with Shelob in it

Does anybody like songs and poetry in novels? Unless I suspect that a clue related to the plot will be hidden in it, I skip it. Fantasy and SciFi writers as especially guilty of this.

Well in the hobbit it does play a role. The entire mythology of the hobbit and LOTR is built around the "music of the gods" and whatnot.
