Ahhhh blissful thoughts. The inevitable email depicting my dearest sympathies has been sent... "Friday will be my last day. Let me know if you need anything".

Basically sent it right after the holiday (New Years) and effectively gave them the equivalent of a 3-day notice. Feels good man knowing that I have 0 fucks to give. I gave them the same ounce of care that I've been given when management denied my vacation hours that were going to expire at the end of the year. The Manager was clearly spiteful and wanted to play politics, so they declined my PTO. That was basically the final straw after a lead-up of tons and tons of other bullshit. I understand that we can't always take vacation - that's why I never ask during busy times, go-lives, etc... This wasn't a busy time. It was just a resentful manager that wanted to be an arsehole.

I've said it before, but all it takes to make a fucking awesome job a piece of shit job is just ONE manager away. Folks, if you like your job - I don't care how good you think you have it, you're one turnover away from going to work and hating every minute of it. All it takes is having a manger like the one I just quit on where they clearly value jobs as a higher priority than family... And it clearly shows when you've been married and divorced twice and are batting for third heh. But I'm sure her 3rd will be the winner she is looking for. Couldn't possibly be something internally that has resulted in all those marital issues.

Goodbye consulting world, I won't miss you in the slightest. I've chased the carrot long enough, it's time to stop and smell the roses for once. Cheers folks.

Do you live in a state that requires them to pay your vacation/PTO when you quit?

Yessir, TX is one of those states. I had basically 6 weeks of PTO. 1 week was going to expire at the end of year.

They denied my vacation on the Friday before I was going to leave (had a flight, hotel, and car booked, etc.) For obvious reasons, I told them that I had a "family emergency" and wouldn't be able to work that week. When you treat me like shit, expect the same response.

Poor management destroys a company and work envioronment. I have heard the saying "middle to upper management\executive in some fortune 500 companies has higher turnover rate than a McDonalds due to poor management" And I emphasize with you since my situation is similar. The job, its roles, and vision are great. Management is not good at all. And it is causing me to lose interest by the day. Luckily vacation is not an issue. Just poor communication and direction\planning driving me crazy.

So looks like I was right all along when I said you worked for a shitty company that was poorly ran.

Congrats on finally manning up and leaving. Good luck on the next chapter.

Considering the success of them - I can't call the Big 4 shitty. Not in the slightest. Knowing how fucking insane our billing rates are ($300/hr for my rate)- and the fact that they constantly have work they are being hired for there has to be something positive they are known for.

I appreciate a lot they have done overall. No doubt my skills and knowledge have vastly increased while with them. My main issue is that these are based on projects. That means, whenever the project ends (3 months, 6 months, or 1-2 years, etc..) that means you move on to the next project... Which will result in a new manager that you run the risk of them sucking. Previously I had some... annoying managers, but I could at least say that there was a light at the end of the tunnel once the project ends. These managers were SO fucking bad I couldn't even last 3 months.

Also recruiters fondling me 24/7 also get a hard-on for them as well ;)

Come visit me in your time off. we can drink beers and shoot guns at trees.

There is a super ratty VFW literally 430 feet from my place, where we can probably run into shorty, as well. ....and the best part is that there is a crack-whore motel right next to the VFW. The entertainment never ends.

Can I have your job?

Take it. Enjoy traveling Monday (6:00 am flight) - Thursday (get home at midnight) along with 10-14 hour work days. Oh - but the consulting firm will support your alcohol addictions and you can charge some drinks every day if that makes up for it.

Tell me where you're at and I just might think about it. Inbetween you sending me to gay bath houses in Chicago I might just have to take you up on that offer if I'm unemployed long enough

Success doesn't really matter as far as being shitty in the sense of it being a good company to work for. Just look at EA. They are by FAR the most successful company as far as money making goes, but they are also known as one of the shittiest companies to work for from an employee perspective.

Big 4 is notorious for being a bad place to work. Not quite on Amazon's level, but close.

There should honestly be something illegal about this. It was essentially extortion because my choices were either...

1) Cancel my trip which would require:
--- Cancelling the flight. That's not free. It has a hefty fee
--- Cancelling the hotel - also a fee.
--- That means my PTO wouldn't be used and would expire at the end of the year. Basically a loss of money.

2) Take the PTO and tell them to fuck off I have a family emergency, no choice lol screw you.

Fairly true. They love to send emails and give shit about "Wellness" and "Work life balance". It's all just one big eye roll because they are full of shit. You would be surprised though because they do have some fairly good benefits - Examples: 5 weeks of PTO everyone starts with, maternity/paternity leave (I used this - 4 month of 100% pay), coverage for fertility as well.

Ultimately I really hope the culture in America changes so that it forces them to comply with realistic expectations. But as long as we still have people that are willing to work ridiculous hours and put up with shit it will continue.

Only thing that kept me going is (unlike other employers) I saw my raise at the end of the year and said... "Alright fuck it I can put up with it for 1 more year".

To be honest the quickest and easiest fix to this problem would be to get rid of salary pay - or at minimal - require overtime pay.

I'm quitting my job this week too and am more bummed about it than anything at the moment. Excited about my new job of course but it’s hard to leave my current one which has treated me really well. I’m giving them like a month notice.

Both jobs are not for profit federally funded research labs which tend to foster healthy work environments and great coworkers.

Fuck no. I give the same level of treatment to the people that they give to me.

Why in the hell would I offer anything to people who have been complete assholes to me?

idk, maybe because you never know who you're going to run into again. i was at a company that was working me 70-80 hours a week on 40 hour salary pay for months, but still gave them 2 week notice.

then again, i certainly wouldn't apply there again, and turnover's so bad nobody would remember me anyway.

that job was also consulting. it sucks, a lot. i never went back to consulting again.
