I purchased some 5300 ram off ebay under the assumption that it was 667mhz. It was my understanding that 5300 was a representation of the base clock speed x8. Upon receiving them, it didnt work and so I contacted the seller only to be told they are not 667, they are 555mhz. Do 555mhz PC2-5300 ram exist? Why is it that every time I look up 5300 it's always 667mhz?

The ram sounds more like DDR2 4200 ram that may run at 555 but, that is not DDR2 5300 according to JEDEC.

Here is the auction I won:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290695613572#ht_1140wt_1260

The sticker clearly says 5300, but at the end it says 555, which I believe could mean the timing. Can anyone clear this up? I think these might be DOA and he's trying to scam me...

There's also no mention of 667 anywhere which makes me hesitant to make that accusation... even though my belief is that 5300 is synonymous with 667mhz... but that's why I'm here asking you guys... could it be true that these are 555mhz?

Haha thanks. Well we had a short volley of ebay messages (2 each i think) and in the last one, i requested a return/refund in which he hasn't responded yet. His return policy is 7 days DOA, so if his silence is due to not wanted to accept them back, I'd have to prove that they are DOA, which is what I'm trying to do... because my system uses 5300 667 and they don't work... but if his argument is that there's a compatibility issue, he can refuse the return :(

Don't know much of anything about ECC RAM, but... can you lower the multiplier to get to 533 speeds? Does the system refuse to post?

Could always just file a dispute. It is fleabay after all ;)

I can't alter it... 667 is all that it will accept. I plan on filing a dispute but I don't want to do it without a good reason (being that I think he's scamming me) because if he is actually telling the truth, I don't want to provoke him into being a dick and not helping me out and accepting a return if the case is that he doesnt have to... which is why im trying to get definitive proof that what he's saying cant be the truth so that filing a dispute will guarantee a refund regardless if he likes it or not.

Well, like Magnus said, 555 is not a standard speed, so you could use that to your advantage. He could counter with the fact that 555, 533, barely any difference, at which point you could say "the auction was for a stick of PC2-5300 RAM. That's 667MHz." The correlation between the two numbers is pretty standard (thanks JEDEC), so he doesn't really have much of an argument other than "I misadvertised, here's your cash back." (Yeah misadvertised isn't a word, but sue me...)

he has 600 plus feedbacks with 100 percent rating.
the sticks are server ecc type.
they also are 667 speed and 555 timing.
just say they don't work with your mobo.
he will most likely take them back.
there is a chance that your mobo only uses non ecc type ram and the problem is on your end not his.
you don't need to go crazy but if you want to do proper research find out if your mobo will handle ecc ram.

or just mail them back and offer to pay the 5 or 6 bucks return postage if he refunds the full amount.
he loses no money to speak of and keeps his 100 percent feedback.

i sell all the time on ebay if it is a used item i always take back and resell it if it is working.

I am absolutely sure that my mobo works with that type of ram because I also won this ram:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/22100079237...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_1201wt_1095

which has the same specs and are sitting in my system now. I showed him that it wasnt a compatibility issue in this fashion as well, and that's when he told me that it's not the same ram, his are 555 and these are 667. So... yeah...

I'm just freaking out because he hasnt responded to my request for a refund in conjunction to his response of what this item is and that it's my fault they dont work essentially...

then put in a claim as his ram is marked as pc2-5300 ram right on the label in his photo and you will win the claim.

Take a screen shot and a pdf of the photo that shows the label for the ebay item.

what board do you have, OP?

And those two auctions, one is an FB-DIMM, the other one only says "buffered". Those might be different. FB-DIMMs are their own category of RAM.

If you look at the two auctions both are FB-DIMM labeled (on the sticker in the picture) and from my understanding FB stands for Fully Buffered, so I believe the "buffered" label was just a redundancy.

I've sold quite a bit of RAM on Ebay, but selling ECC memory has always been a pain. Twice I had sticks returned that worked fine once I got them back. My guess is that these are just not compatible with your system.

According to the part number (SG5127FBD12852HCDL) it should be 667 RAM:
http://www.zmaxtech.com/sg5127fbd12852hcdl.html

http://www.memory4less.com/m4l_itemdetail.aspx?itemid=1447400163&partno=SG5127FBD12852HCDL

Thank you very much. I think you just closed the deal for me :) Now I can confidently get a refund!

Am I the only one that reads that as C555? As in Cas 5 - 5 - 5? As in the most common timings for DDR2 @ 667?
