If you do it after a certain time one day, they may get it cleared the next working day. Just depends on the bank.

For new accounts, they can take forever.

After you've had your account for a while they'll relax some.

Out of state checks take longer. Look at your bank's website or the literature they gave you describing the terms of your account. You should read documents before you sign them.

Federal law only gives them either 3 or 4 days. I think it's three though.

When you sign up for a new checking account they hold all checks for 14 days. After that it takes 2-3 days to clear.

You pretty sure about that?
14 days sounds like a long time.

Not true. Around here (Southwest PA), the former Mellon Bank placed a hold of 8 business days on all checks for a full month after the account was opened, and regardless of what bank the checks are from. The norm for banks here is to hold checks deposited into new accounts for 5 business days.

If you're strapped for cash, your best bet is to try to cash the checks at the bank they're from, and deposit only cash into your account. Once the "probation" period for the new account has passed, you can start depositing the checks without much hassle.

I opened one at Bank of New York in June, 14 days no joke.
