morpheus - captain of the nebuchadnezzar in the matrix
thadius - captain of the osiris in final flight of the osiris (animatrix)
niobe - captain of the tholos (jada pinkett smitth in matrix reloaded)

just wondering if there's a significance to this.

there are ships in the matrix series (the matrix, animatrix, and matrix reloaded). these ships have captains that are in charge, as is the case on any military ship. all the captains presented thus far are african american. i am wondering if there's is any significance to this. also, zion is the "promised land" in many religions. it is located in africa.

oh, well that sheds some light on it. i took a pop culture class last summer and found out that the matrix was really a metaphor for how our society is a group of sheep that blindly follow those in the entertainment business. i even wrote a paper about it. it made perfect sense, too!

it was less than 70%. only 4 black characters w/ 'major' speaking roles in the matrix - oracle, morpheus, doser, tank. and even that is questionable. tank and the oracle are very light-skinned. i'm wondering if they're even african american. there more 'white' characters with major speaking roles - neo, trinity, switch, mouse, apoc, cypher, the three agents, etc

Actually you are a sheep following the entertainment buisness by writing a paper about following the entertainment buisness.

Congratulations sheep boy..

maybe because our species spread from africa, so that's where we congregate to start the recolinization of the earth.

obviously thats as far as society has let them rise so you find a preponderance of talented black people being held back at the rank of captain. i demand we hire a black head coach at alabama!

Yes, but the One who will save them all is a half-awake, semi-stoned white surfer dude.

Coincendence - or something more? ;)

o common, i'm serious! go back and watch the original matrix, there was a specific reason for everything, it seems. there was to be a reason for this.

i like shiz's interpretation of the use of the name "zion". it is also interesting that being the last human city left in the war against the machines, zion may also serves as the first city that begins the revival of the human race and restoration of earth.

How do you know they are American? Couldn't they be from other parts of the globe as well?

well i originally stated that they were black, but someone didn't realize what i meant until i used the term "african-american." and yes, as far as i know jada pinkett and laurence fishbourne are african american. it's not clear if they play americans in the movie, but presumably that doesn't really matter considering that there is only ONE FARKING CITY LEFT IN THE WORLD

Of course the actors are mostly Americans, but that doesn't mean that their characters are as well. And like you said, there really are no nationalities in the movie.

Racism! Let me go picket and raise a stink just like Jesse Jackson. Why didnt they put white actors in charge of the ships? Are they trying to say that whites are inferior at leadership? My organization wants millions of dollars to keep our mouthes shut, or well picket and look like even larger bigots and morons than we already are.
