I just noticed something on Anandtech review on the Abit KT7-raid!

He was using a Western Digital hard drive and an IBM one in raid 0. I thought you need two drives the same. I've got the non raid version of the KT7, but I bought a Fasttrak 66 raid controller. What I was woundering is could I do the same with my 20.5gig Quatum HD 7200rpm and my Fugistu 8.4 gig HD 5400rpm? Or I could even take my 15gig WD from my other computer and do it. I'm not sure if it's 7200 or 5400 rpm though.

u could do it on those two drives, mind u, u'd lose 12gb from your 20gb drive
because it can only set up an array the size of the smallest drive...quite obvious...

so your raid config would give u 16gb, which is considerably less than your non-raid..
and a damn waste...u need two same sized drives if u dont' plan on wasting hdd space.

You could do it, but I wouldn't. When striping two different hard drives, the limitations of the slower smaller drive will impact performance and capacity a lot. That is why it is strongly recommended to get identical drives for RAID. If you were to use your 20.5GB 7.2K RPM drive with the 8.4GB 5.4K RPM drive. The overall performace would be much slower than the single 20.5GB 7.2K RPM drive plus you'll only end up with 16.8GB of storage space. If you were to use the 15GB drive you would end up with 30GB of total space. Again, you would also have to consider that the limitations of the slower drive would determince the overall performace. I would strongly advise againt mixing different drives for RAID-0.
