Come to think of it, I'm waiting for the i3 6100 to come out and perhaps get the H170 motherboard which has the DDR3, wonder if DDR3 2133 or 2400 will matter or not. Or just go for the H170 with DD4 or Z170 instead, that way I have the option to move up to an i5 or i7 years later... but the problem is I'd have to get part by part separately due to lower income at the moment (laid off).

Keep in mind if Cannonlake ends up compatible with the 100 series you would need DDR4 anyway since it only has the DDR4 memory controller.

I got 2666 for my X99. But really, you guys should give the OP a break, it is a huge upgrade, and looks like an overall awesome build.

Not to mention, the point the OP is making and which users here are utterly failing to consider is that he is NOT interested in diminishing returns for substantially more $$$.

Sure, he could spend 50% extra on faster RAM, but will he notice a difference between 58 fps and 57 fps? Unlikely.

Same reason why he is buying a 390. He is looking for bang for the buck, not HEDT + multicard graphics level of performance.

I daresay he'll enjoy his new rig, what with its MASSIVE performance increase over his old one :)

He may actually have his cake and eat it too, with a bit of luck: if Kingston is using Hynix chips for his kit just like this 4x4GB 2133 kit then he may very well be able to run DDR4 2800+ CL14 @ 1.35V

I believe he made a very inspired choice (as in balanced), despite what others in this thread make of it. We should know soon enough if OP is still willing to share info on the new system.

DDR4 2133, such a waste. Even on Haswell-E...You need at least 2666
Funny, my 5960x is OC'd to 4.4Ghz (44x100) and I have DDR4-2800 ram but to assure stability on Asus RealBench I keep the ram at 2133. I don't disagree that buying higher speed ram for the Skylake gets better performance; however the tradeoff is stability.

I'm happy with my 5960X at a solid 4.4Ghz/2133 and my 4790k at a solid 4.7Ghz/2400.

UglyDucking CONGRATULATIONS!!! Great upgrade.:awe:

My system right now.

AMD Phenom II x4 B55 4.0ghz
4GB Geil Black Dragon 1600mhz DDR3
MSI 790FX-GD70
1GB HD7770
Corsair TX650W

My system in the coming few days...

Core i7 6700k
16GB Kingston Hyper X Fury Black 2133 DDR4
MSI Z170A Gaming M7
8GB MSI Gaming R9 390

Hopefully BF4 will now be playable :O

It should certainly be playable with that rig. Nice upgrade!

And here's the review and oc results for the 2x8GB 2133 Kingston HyperX Fury that OP likely ordered.

The dimms sport Hynix chips and can overclock up to DDR4 3200. A most notable mention is DDR4-2666 CL14 @ 1.23V, a really good setting latency and voltage wise. (test was done on a Skylake system)

OP, I hope you have a bit of luck and a lot of fun with this kit.

Tweaktown, legitreviews, and hexus all show 3000+ memory speeds having little impact (less than 5%) on gaming compared to even 2133. However, given that 2133 and 2666 speeds are roughly the same price, you should use 2666.

As well as AT:

Memory bandwidth benches will show big differences. I guess many just see those and think they apply everywhere.

The Anandtech one is outright horrible tho in this relation.

GTX770 and quad channel.

And as always in such cases, remove the GPU bottleneck. Else its a systems test and not a memory/cpu scaling test.

Yeah, but 1.54V!

That is a bit much. 1.5v is the max Intel will allow for XMP settings. The ICs may be able to handle more than that, but you also have to think of how the IMC will be affected by higher vDIMM. Some Intel IMCs do not like heavily-overvolted RAM.

From what you had, your new build will certainly put a smile on your face. Great CPU / GPU choices. Down the road get a 2nd 390 and you will be able to play DX12 games next year for sure
