RIAA does marketing study to determine 1) who is most willing to buy music, and 2) what that group wants to hear.

Said marketing study produces BS musicians who can't write nor sing like Britney Spears.

RIAA buys most local radio stations in the US via Clear Channel to FORCE said BS musicians down our ears/throats.

People start turning off their radios and start turning on Internet stations and downloading mp3s.

RIAA attacks online stations and music "pirates."

RIAA knows it can't sell music based on talent, so it must resort to lesbian kisses and bewbies.

Anyone care to add to this list?

And then they resort to lame-ass stunts like the Britney/Madonna kiss and now the Justin/Janet thing at the Super Bowl.

Just give us REAL music from people with REAL talent.

Yep they do marketing research, just like any industry.

They produce BS artist to you and many others, but there are also millions buying albums from these bands you consider crap. It's a BUSINESS, and they will continue doing so. Just because we don't like it, doesn't mean others don't.

I don't think people are turning off their radios. More people are turning on internet and mp3's, but it's NOT because of the sh!tty music on the radio. The radio has always been like that. People steal music cause they want stuff for free. Lets be honest here.

I dunno about the whole lesbian kissing thing and bewbies, but i'd rather see that then some of those ugly musicians mugs! :)

Well...believe me, I DO! Just not as a legit attempt to sell crappy music to the masses, especially kids.

No. Radio was not a corporate entity with playlists dictated by who gave them the most money.
The dj's were the voice to the public. They provided much needed exposure and opinion about music.

Today radio is a monopolized communication medium. Hardly worth of the name "radio" if you compare it to the past.

But, I'm sure you knew that.

i never understood how Top 40 lists are made in the first place. sales of singles? who buys singles? radio call-in requests? people only request what the radios are already letting them hear. where does the list come from?

What I like is Mitsubishi and their Eclipse ad campaign. It targeted the exact people they wanted. Young 20s folks that were more relaxed and laid back. Created commercials, ads, etc. to appeal to this group.

The ads are a huge success, the company sells assloads of Eclipses. Not long after, there is a huge spike in loan defaults by Eclipse owners, and Mitsu has something like a 420mil loss. Would have helped had they done a bit more research to see if the people they were marketing toward could manage money :)

Guess you never heard of the "payola" scandal of the radio days of yesteryear? DJ's were being paid unider the table to either play certain artists heavily, or to NOT play other artists. It was a big deal when it was going on.

Yes I know about payola. It still pales in comparison what is happening today.
