I just killed some Crucial RAM :(

I was fiddling with an Abit KG7-RAID and a just-unlocked Duron 900. Set the FSB to 150, multiplier to 6.5, boost the VCORE by .05v and the VMEM by .05v, was running fine for a bit, and then it locked. Reboot gave me a memory beep. Cleared CMOS and still memory beep. Put in another stick of Crucial, and it booted up fine. Put original stick in, beep. Damnit!!! This is the second stick of Crucial 256MB PC2100 that I've seen dead. The first stick was in my friend's computer in a Shuttle AK31A running all defaults (266MHz FSB, memory set to AUTO) and it just up and died one night while it was running. Damdest thing... anyone else have RAM just die on them like that? What brand/type?

I never had anyhting like that happen on my memory i use Samsung 2100/2700 on diff systems and never had any problems

That is really odd. Crucial is known to be top-notch in the quality department. Been through 3 sticks myself and have never had a problem.

People usually can't kill the stuff if they try.

The only time I've killed Crucial RAM (actually any RAM) was when I left it in my pocket and the wife washed it. 😉

Luckily they were only 2 64MB & 2 128MB. One of the 128MB was fine, but the others didn't live through it. 🙁

I'm not trying to imply that Crucial RAM isn't good or anything. It's just a strange experience I had yesterday. We've been through about 25-30 sticks of Crucial DDR (not to mention all the sticks of SDRAM) and these two are the only ones that died.

It seems like the only way people manage to kill crucial ram is by upping the vdimm voltage. I think I'll stick to raising the vcore.

So is that a stick of RAM in your pocket, or are you just glad to see us? 😀

but isn't that why you buy direct from crucial--lifetime warranty baby! i've had to return two sticks and each time is very pleased with its replacement.

I dont think the crucial just died I sure its something else, I have one of my systems runing the crucial at 165fsb for almost a year now. Also I have built about 35 overclocked systems this last year and all of them have crucial pc 2100 running at at least 150fsb

BAH! I think I'm just having a bad RAM week (like a bad hair day, but much worse). Building four systems Thursday and Friday, three P4 2.4 with 512MB Kingston PC2700 and one P4 2.0A with 256MB Kingmax PC2100, all with AOpen AX4G Pro motherboards. The first 2.4 and the 2.0A went fine, but two of the 2.4 (these have same board, CPU and RAM as the first one) wouldn't POST. One of these POSTed just fine with another stick (Mushkin basic 512MB PC2100) of RAM, so I tested the original RAM in the 2.0A board, and it wouldn't POST. The guy that was working on these with me left the other board running for a moment, listening to the "Dr Voice" (a voice from the PC speaker which supposedly says what's wrong) and the board started smoking! The DIMM slot had melted a bit and two of the contacts on the RAM were burnt. We didn't bother trying to fiddle with the other stick of Kingston RAM - didn't want to risk another board. Sucks - a bad end to a long week. 🙁
