I'm finally jumping onto the Linux bandwagon, I installed Ubuntu on a VMware machine I setup today and now I need a few projects to get started with. Any suggestions?

If you like coding or want to learn how to code write a program to do messaging (some thing with similar functionality as AIM, YIM, Jabber/XMPP, etc).
You could make it command line based and stuff. That would be a cool project.

Unfortunately I have 0 coding experience, I probably should have mentioned that I was more interested in sys admin projects and tasks to learn the OS.

this is friggin sweet, I finally got the network portion of Ubuntu running, In fact I'm posting this from with Ubuntu.

Next task is to play around with the command line prompt, I just gotta figure out how to get to it

They did make the terminal harder to find, just hit ALT+F2 and type 'gnome-terminal' in the run dialog.

As for what to do with it, if you don't have any specific task for the thing just start by doing all of the things your normally do in any other OS.

Might as well start with LAMP

Arkitech don't try to learn Linux on a forum it's to invloved, join ----> Freenode's IRC server, irc.freenode.net and then join #ubuntu
