A device that, when turned on, answers your phone and tells the person calling that they are sleeping...and that if it's very important you can push a button and the call will go through (but warning them that the person is asleep and may not be in a good mood). The phone will never ring unless the caller pushes that button to send it through. That way...no more annoying phone calls at 7 in the morning!

What we really need is a device that could be used to filter posts from annoying people regardless of the time of day.

Kind of like an automated secretary, of sorts. Not bad. You don't have to limit it to just sleep.

Are you suggesting that someone invent an answering machine that can be set to 0 rings? because I'm pretty sure it's been done...decades ago.

There are some open source PBX systems you could use for this... maybe even check eBay for this?

I've thought about this, but maybe with hidden menu's that I would tell only a close group of people how to access so they can be directed to me even if I'm asleep.

yeah this sounds like an answering machine set to 0 messages and programmed to pick up the calla fter 1 ring which can be done.
also sounds like you are just too lazy to turn down the volume while you sleep, or set it to vibrate like i do with my cellphone

I have also wanted one of these inventions. But I just tell people to keep calling if it's really important, and I keep the phone at just the right distance so I can hear it, but one call won't wake me up. Of course, not everyone can process that stuff in their sleep (and I don't know how I do it)...I can easily sleep through a thunderstorm or a vacuum cleaner, but the tiniest whisper of my name through a closed door brings me instantly awake. Pretty handy overall.

On the subject of noises waking one up, the still-in-the-box talking watch my mom bought the other day just started crowing like a rooster. I've been wondering for days what the crack was making that sound...
