i just got used xbox

plays game fine but when i put audio cd i get error message. I tried dvd movie but keep saying i need to plug in dvd playback kit. U need to buy dvd kit to play dvds? xbox cant read audio cds? I tried original cd and burned cd one that i made but same error

Yes, you have to buy the $30 DVD kit. I don't know about audio CDs.

regular cds it can read and copy to hard drive (i have done it)
burned cds wont work, unless you get the mod chip.
you have to buy the dvd playback kit, but it is mainly for the lil infared reciever. i have found that RCA codes work in place of the remote. but you still need that dvd playback kit

If you have a Costco near you, the kit is $20.

Yeah, you need a kit to play DVDs.

IMO, the kit's a ripoff. $20-$30 for a friggin remote. They should let you use the controller as a remote like PS2, but Micro$oft wants all the money they can get.

AFAIK they have to pay for the DVD playback licence (something like $10?) at least you dont have to pay for it if you already have a DVD player
