I have little utility for a blurry 60" display. But my graphics card supports S-Video out, if that's what you mean.

For ease of use from a TV, Tivo cannot be beat.

Yes $299 lifetime or $12.95/mo

You could get Tivo like functionality WITHOUT a lifetime or monthly fee though.

If your PC's video card has S-Video, get a TV tuner card ($90) + PVR (Tivo like software for $60) ... it does basically the same thing as Tivo but without monthly fees.

I've got a DirecTV Tivo that I expanded which is awesome. Wish they would give more options to the receivers like a DVD player and/or media server options though. Apparently DirecTV's new owners are considering going with their own DVR options once the Tivo contract is up so I doubt we'll see anything beyond the HD DirecTivos.

Queasy,

DirecTIVO freakin' rocks. I've had ReplayTV 3060, DirecTV and ReplayTV 5040. DirecTIVO is by far the best desktop PVR I have ever used.

I recently switched to SageTV and ditched my TiVo. I can't believe how great the software is, especially the newly released 2.0. I run 3 tuner cards so can watch/record up to 3 simultaneous programs, plus stream the content (both recorded and live) over my network to my home theater room. I can also very easily dump files to my server, to DVDs, etc.

I run HTPCs in my 2 TV watching rooms anyway, so I didn't have to worry about the additional cost of a PC.

Nothing against TiVo - it's fantastic. However, it's amazing what you can do with a PC and some software.

That's exactly what I plan on doing. Which remote do you use?

I'm currently using the remote included with the Happauge PVR-250. However, I just purchased a Home Theater Master MX-800 and plan on switching over to that. I need the RF/IR Blaster capability since the equipment is towards the back of my room.

I also have the Toshiba model with basic service. I don't think I'm going to spend any money on their monthly service. If I want to see something bad enough I'll manually tell I to record.

What they need is a TIVO unit that can record the entire cable signal, everything on it. I wonder how hard that would be to accomplish.

Do people that do this have their PC's in their living rooms next to their TV's? I always wondered about the logistics of this...you would have to have your PC in close proximity of your TV, which wouldn't be possible in a lot of people's cases. It just seems like it would be awkward to control that type of setup...dunno.

Anyway Rossman, your solution cost $150, got mine WITH an included progressive scan DVD player built in for $85.

Tivo basic service is free. You can record programs up to 3 days in advance, as well as fast forward, rewind, slomo, and pause live TV.

Tivo Plus service for $12.95 allows you to record up to two weeks in advance, use a network device to play MP3s and JPEGS on your TV, use a Season pass to automatically find and record your favorite TV shows, skip repeats in recording, set recording from any internet connection, move recorded shows from one Tivo to another, and coming soon: move recordings to a PC for viewing or copying to a DVD/VCD (supposed to be mid 2004).

I have a TV card that has PVR capabilities, but it's too problematic (Haupaugge software crashes half the time I use it). Tivo is the way to go :)
