I just got thrown under the bus by my co-workers

imo they didn't throw you under a bus. you stuck your neck out expecting backup and not finding anyone willing to come to your aid. as was said earlier, if you are willing to gamble on your job, then bring those issues up again, but if not, just lay low until your response is required.

never bring issues out to 'the big boss' without discussing it with your boss and his boss and developing a plan first. that is a quick way to make enemies and squash your career. you need to get your immediate management bought into the issues and develop a resolution plan. then you take the problem and the solution to the big boss and have him approve it. you are paid to identify and solve problems, not just bring up problems without a solution.

I know I should have known better. In the spur of the moment - since my Boss and the Helpdesk Manager said everything was fine and they couldn't think of any issues I firgured I would bring it up otherwise it wouldn't be fixed. I got sucked in by the supposedly supportive and team environment.....

Everybody thinks their front line manager is an incompetent douche but it's your job to convince them of the problems.
